hey there dirt, and all... say, i've only caught a bit of all this, not much at all...

oops, philo, is you are still here,i didn't warn any one as to the "full-up-over load" post, since i did not yet know about them then... but i was very worried about your leg, and i know i did post that---i sure hope you leg will be well... i will be praying... (course i would want to warn someone, if something bad was going-down, even as the other gal warned US)...

though, i DO KNOW that i TOO, saw a warning message about not to open certain post, so i stepped back for awhile, not sure what to do--perhaps we are not to be posting here anymore, or reading all this neat stuff... i didnt really know... i sure was SAD about it all though:

am not sure, i think it was blinny??? (was it you--if so, i reckon you helped me, as i have a slow computer and i only have 8 bucks in the bank, and am not doing well---i would never be able to fix my computer for perhaps a year!!

i did hear too, that russ had put a large file? did not know if this was true, or what... but i did take the warning post, serious, from the kind folks that let us know...

i was thankful, though, for that warning post, and when i saw that---well, i had not posted much at all, being that i heard that some computers were messed up...

sorry for the ramble... i just never seen or heard of all this kind of stuff going on, before.. i am new to all this...

say, werner, as to this:

"Primary victims of buffer overflow were Blinny, zip and Karen.
Anyone else?"

i got through all this okay, and my computer still works... i really need it for my book series, or i can not write... plus, i need to keep contact with my dad and i can not pay long distance phone calls.. but i am okay, so far, sicne some kind gals said to take care, here, on supertopo...

i am very sorry there computers got stuck... :(

sure hope all you all are all doing okay, each and every one of you all, are speical.. sometimes it is hard to see that, as there are so many different oppions, etc...

but you all are a "life" and "life" is speical...
god bless, all...

Karl - with all due respect, you didn't really answer the question. I'm simply trying to
pin down what happened in your case. So how long was it from the time you clicked
on the thread until you took the rather drastic action of the force-shutdown?
How much RAM is in your MBP? I still think you would have been OK had you waited it out.

Or you could have tried force quitting Safari from the keyboard shortcut Command + Option + esc
(or force quit other running apps to free up more RAM - I'd be surprised that the Finder froze).

So how many minutes did you wait? I could see that if you were impatient and didn't
have to worry about lost data, since the MBP will boot up in less than 30 seconds...

The crashes are interesting. It's even more interesting that it seems to have mainly (only?) effected Macs. I find that odd, in that MacOS typically handles memory better than PC's. Of course, I think people probably cheap it on the memory more when they buy Macs, due to the higher cost.

My friend just got 4 GB of RAM for for his new MBP for $67.00 (!!!!!!!!!!!!1111),
and it's from Crucial, which is considered a good (yet inexpensive) after-market brand.

Shall we start a new "nuke" thread so he can test it? (since the old one got deleted)

Yeah, but I think a lot of peeps buying Macs want everything taken care of in the showroom. Last I checked, it was a little pricey to add more RAM at the time of purchase? That's more what I was thinking. Whereas you or I would simply buy the RAM online and add ourselves and save a few bucks.

We could start a nuke thread, but we'd have to get people to test it. :)

2 gigs. Don't know how long I waited cause I went away and did other things to give it time.

Got a link for that Memory price? I've got the New MBP which needs 1076 MHz DDr3 can't find 4 gigs near that cheap

Let me know when you have it installed. In the meantime, I'm trying to locate the infamous
"nuke" image, and I will start a new thread, replete with dire warnings of certain doom...

I find it quite fascinating that both Mac's and pc's were supposedly affected. Maybe, at the least, we can kill that prolonged debate and put it to rest.
Mac vs. pc-they BOTH crash under duress.

The nucular explosion, in all its wide-screen giant file size glory, was at http://www.supertopo.com/climbing/thread.html?topic_id=831199 As is the way of explosions, it seems now to have dissipated.

I didn't count, but I was under the strong impression that most of the squeaky wheels were Mac owners.... The only PC I remember was Zip?

I located the Nuke image, and have uploaded it to my server. It's 5.4 MB and 5991 X 4740 pixels.
The question is: how the nuke was deployed? Was it posted multiple times? If so, on top of
itself or side by side? Please advise. I can't wait to test it on the 1 Ghz Pentium III with 256 MB RAM. ;-)

HK: nuke was loaded in standard brackets.... and since the smarter among us will bypass the loading, it was posted again in a new reply with a new name for the file, like nukeI and nukeII. So two total for this version of "the end is near"

load 'er up son and see what we get.

Don't call the G'dam FBI though..... them guys really dont mess around!

Folks, I'm disappointed at the lack of proper conspiracy conjecturationizing here.

FACT #1:
It is theoretically possible for a specially crafted file to exploit a buffer over-flow error in image rendering software and cause that application to crash; in many operating systems it is also possible for a buffer overflow error in one application to cause data in other critical applications to be corrupted, effectively requiring a reboot.

FACT #2:
It is possible that the image Russ posted is perfectly fine, and another 'net a stalker piggy-backed on the thread with another exploit. Remember how we were having fun with avatar images and triggering pop-up windows? There are a variety of ways that tech-savvy and sneaky people can do bad things. There is room for security improvement on this and many other forums. but with more security we sacrifice ease-of-use and give up some of the nice features that draw us to the site.

FACT #3:
On it's own, posting a big picture is not a big deal. People have to take some level of personal responsibility for their computer set-up... did anyone complain about the number of pictures in the "who the h3ll are you people?" thread?

FACT #4:
Juan wins for the best posting on this thread.

FACT #5:
Whoever had the avatar with the stick-figure doggie-style scene with head going through the wall... well they win the prize for the best avatar. Wish I saved it.

FACT #6:
I have seen my vas deferens with my naked eye.

FACT #7:
We need to see more Chuck Norris jokes...
"Outer space exists because it's afraid to be on the same planet with Chuck Norris."
http://www.chucknorrisfacts.com/

FACT #8:
Looks like it's time for another climbing adventure to get my head right and keep me out of the cesspool. This is like a car wreck where you can't stop yourself from looking....

Ummm... We already covered buffer over-runs, overflow, etc. As you stated, end result = reboot. Don't think anyone really disputed that.

So Russ - I did find the two identical files with different names on the offending server,
so I was wondering whether they were both loaded - so was it just one or two URLs?

I will start a new thread with the most dire warning imaginable - so that casualties are minimal...
