If you're a generally good and genuine and fun person, sites like Supertopo (avatar or no avatar) reveal/portray you to be good and genuine and fun. Ie: Mark Hudon, J Elezarian, Vitaliy etc...

If you're a generally normal person but have a tendency to be angry and resentful and
combative....the internet really magnifies those characteristics and you pretty much become un-likeable or un-liked by most of the "normal folk" as you engage with others just like you.

So a place like Supertopo really seems to incubate aggression and anger for some and stoke for others. Its really just not a good match for some people......and those are the people who basically seem to be addicted to the place.

Here's what's gonna happen:

1) The bigots can take their bigotry elsewhere. Like CMac says, there is a forum for everything, There is no room for bigotry in the mountains or on a climbing forum.

2) CMac tosses your sorry ass.

3) The nuclear option: we make a big stink down at the gym, get CMac's books tossed off the shelf, kick him in his pocketbook, some bad press for the climbing community... how far do you wanna go?

One day soon society may be able to screen embryos for these undesirable tendencies, and spontaneously abort future forum 'ruiners'. Then the world will be made up of the likes of Mark Hudon, J Elezarian, Vitaliy etc...(By the worldwide good and fun selection committee)

More likely than the "nuclear option" is that the gym will not only have Cmac's books on it's shelves, but also a large LED flatscreen intermittently displaying adds of Cmac telling you how much his sleep-number bed has improved his climbing and quality of life.

Buy one and get over yourselves.

I don't think purchasing power is gonna rid the world or this forum of bigots. You gotta realize bigots have money too. What will rid this forum of bigots is moderation and a set of rules. Break the rules you get a warning or two. Continue to break them and your gone. As much as I'm opposed to moderation it works. As far as ridding the world of bigots only time will tell.

you stand where you want

That should be defined as "self moderation".

There's no such thing as "no moderation".

Moderation can never ever be eliminated.

Where does jonnyrig stand?

You most likely are a very good welder .......

If you weld good that's more than enough for me.

I can solder real good as I've got 50 years of experience soldering.

But I can't weld worth sh!t.

Aluminum is a hard metal to master a good weld .....

Dr. F has called for people to be killed.

He has called women c#&%s.

He is hardly a voice of moderation.

Yes, aluminum is difficult. We got a fancy new TIG machine at work, and I'm learning. Slowly. Soldering can be an art in itself, mostly for us because we deal with wiring that corroded due to salt. That and copper pipe are the extent of my soldering experience.

Now if I can just get some more time in climbing I could maybe do something worthy of a genuine TR...

QIT,

I 100% share your sentiments with regard to the the topic of racism, bigotry, homophobia and plain old hate ruining SuperTopo.

It is just so ugly and nothing makes a person not want to log onto a forum more than the hate ugliness and sad pathetic thinking redundant and repetitively shared by a select few around here. Sadly that select few is a chore group on ST that seems to own the place at times. I don't want to enforce my ways or ideals on anyone but when the topic is racism and hate it is hard not to. We are not talking about what color the banner should be atop the forum page. We are talking about hate ugliness and a bunch of sad pathetic old men! You all detract from and ruin what could be a great forum and a website with loads of great climbing history and content.

My grandfather was a bigot, and a drunk go figure! The two all so often seem to go hand and hand. Anyway I never cared much for the old bastard. Actually I did not like the man at all so much so the only reason I went to his funeral was to be of support to my mother. Still then it took everything I had to walk up to his casket and wish him farewell. I did not want to as I did not feel he was worth the effort or deserved my energy. When I did I had nothing nice to say to him but only he and I knew that on that day. He was family so I did tolerate him to a degree growing up but only because I had to and only when I had to. As a family we all made excuses for him that it was generational, if you had known his father you would understand how he got the way he is blah blah. He really could be much worse they would say as if it was an actual excuse for his sad ugliness. As a child I almost bought this horse sh#t train of thought. An excuse derived to allow one to continue loving someone that offered very little to love or mask a giant hole in that persons being that they wanted to love as it was their father and only natural despite his ugliness.. The excuses always sounded like horse sh#t to me but I was young and many of my choices where made for me as they often are when we are children. Regardless they could never make me like that ugly bigoted angry old man. As an adult I am proud that even as a child my intuition always overcame the excuses my elders made for him. What an ugly place for a child to have to choose between loving a bigoted parent because they are your parent and your supposed to love them or walking away because they are ugly with little to offer. Yup for me if you are a bigot it clouds anything good you might have buried under that layer of ugly.

As we have all gotten older and become adults with families of our own I have noticed something. His children at least the majority of them whom once spoke out against my grandfathers bigotry and hate have become very bigoted with age. I just don't get it in this day and age how can anyone be a freaking bigot. You gotta have your head so squarely planted straight up your own ass. It was almost 150 years ago now the 13th amendment was enacted and you still have not figured out that your white ass is no better or different than the guy next to you with an ass of a different color. If you don't think so sorry you are a sad excuse for a human being and not human at all and you are the one we would all be better off without.

I can put up with all the old turds around here arguing amongst each other about this or that. The problem is often the chore of all that arguing is hate clearly based in bigotry. Nothing turns my stomach and makes me want to lash out and act like jack ass more than some of these old turds, or write a short story lol. I will admit it is very hard to refrain from slinging sh#t right back at a few of these offenders when they start with their narrow minded sh#t throwing. It's sad really and nothing imop detracts and drives more people away from all the good content that Supertopo has to offer than these ugly simple minded old fools.

Wrong!!

Clearly I am aware that many a young bigot exist even 150 years later. It does seem largely to be a old mans disease however. Well that and a uneducated intellectually challenged and or brainwashed young person disease.

Ya'll kidding me right? Even this thread puts the DISS in dysfunctional. (since I'm not one of the cool kids) It's like I bought a house next to a large dysfunctional family and get to see and hear everything. It is like a family because, on occasion, you DO all pull together. Really cool to see btw. Generally speaking, however, open minded behavior is NOT running rampent on this forum.

Apogee, although I can understand why Ron A. attracts so much negative sh! t, from my point of view it did look pretty stalkish what you were doing...unhealthy for anyone to be that obsessed. Good for you stepping back and taking a deep breath and taking control. This internet sh!t is easy to get addicted to and worked up about. Now because I'm thinking of how Neebee acts on this site, I'm going back to looking for inspirational TR's and climbing info. The stuff that got me on this site in the first place.

Some of these dudes run around here with a giant, self-imposed "kick me" sign on their backs and can't figure out why their asses hurt so much. For the life of me, I can't figure out why certain individuals post and post and post, even when getting barbequed and fuked with, ad infinitum. Loneliness? What would it be like for them without this outlet to rant and rave on? Like Jack Nicholson at the end of The Pledge, staggering around out in the desert madly mumbling to themselves?

personally I don't plan to intentionally meet people over the internet. if I happen to meet someone out climbing and the subject comes around to supertopo how they post is a window into who they are in my opinion. so I agree with others that what people post is more significant if it is significant at all, than whether they use their real name or an avatar

this coming from a guy who posts very little but has lurked for a long time

Edit: thanks for the apolollogee

when people get kicked off this site they are free to just create a new username and proceed as usual?

I think that might be part of the problem

I'm not at all familiar with the level of moderation here though so maybe that's not true?

seems like the people I see booted invariably return sooner than later with the same posting style that got them kicked out to begin with

skc, I think our definitions of 'stalking' are a bit different, then...in regards to my sniping, I tend to lean more towards John M's 'hounding' term. Semantics, for the most part, methinks.

tradman, you seem to have a pretty rigid view of the whole real name vs. avatar thing, and I don't begrudge that, given your past history. I'm curious, then, how that view applies to those ST'ers who have been repeatedly banned and return under ephemeral avatars...there are at least 2-3 of them off the top of my head who had prolific posting histories under an avatar- they may have been very confrontational, but they didn't really get down to real sh#t-talk. Do you hold the same contempt for them?
