I was not one of the current several million people who now say they were at Woodstock. I was in the Tetons.

Exploring virgin choss on the Oregon coast and learning it isn't wise to look upwards at the pretty trees overhead when you're riding a motorcyle on un-frequented logging roads as it can suddenly result in you finding your front wheel on the left side and your rear wheel on the right side of a log in the road! And why did those trees look so pretty? That's why you shouldn't have gotten on the bike in the first place.

on a dry and dusty Marine Base in the middle of the Mojave Desert, watching my uncle go off to some place called Woodstock NY.

All the way across the country? In that?! I was 9, he was 19 and I knew they would never make it. (They didn't.)

XM radio, channel 40, all weekend.

Summering in Ojai.

This was the year before "the awakening". In 1969 I had discovered music, but 1970 was the year I was truly introduced to mountains. Life has never been the same.....

I was 8 and attempting, with no sense of irony whatsoever, to form a band called The Black Panthers. I was going to, of course, play the tamborine.

airing it out on the lam, soaking up western vistas before settling into redwood filtered academia on the slopes above santa cruz.
reeling from one blessing to the next, it was as clear as could be that we're all in god's pocket. just gotta stay right with the light.

from time to time that feeling returns. if it turns out that was "as good as it gets"... just saying,
it was good enough to sustain

Seven years old and riding my banana seat bike in Worcester, Massachusetts. Both my parents were working and going to school at a university, so I had a vague awareness of what was going on in yonder neighboring state. Lots of Janis Joblin and The Who in my house in those days... even a Hookah! Though my Mom will never admit to that now!
