I just came across this great video on how carabiners are made.

http://www.allclimbing.com/archive/2009/02/the-making-of-a-carabiner-at-dmm/

After all these years of climbing, i had no real idea of how biners were made until i saw this. Its a much more intensive process than i imagined.

I found that story at this web site:

Hey Chris, thats pretty cool. I had a chance to tour the Sterling rope factory with Jim E. and was blown away by it. Good to know how it happens and who is doing it. I'm definitely a sterling fan after that.

Very cool Chris. Aircraft standards seem to be kept with this production. These standards include, the hardness testing of the 7075-T3 stock, heat treat and artificial aging of the aluminium, testing the batch again with a load test of one in the batch, and the very important visual inspection.

Good to see. Let's take a WHIPPA! ha!

Cool video.

My nonclimbing wife has a short list of rental houses in the Snowdonia area for trip to Wales this summer.

We'll have some time in Llanberis area(home of Pete's Eats, DMM and those scary slate routes).

a while back, dmm sent me a cool dvd tour of their facility, included that, a bunch of testing stuff and the ice tool manufacturing spot that was on the 'how its made' show.

pretty rad stuff.

That was very cool. I liked how they gave us a bunch of views on the destructo machine at the end.

Thanks for the link, Chris. I toured OP's factory years ago and really began to appreciate what goes into making quality gear. Needless to say, it's worth it.

I got a tour of a large equipment/carabiner manufacturer in the Salt Lake City area once. Fascinating stuff. Apparently a lot of visitors love to see the testing/busting part.
