I went from the couch to climbing 5.11 and have strained (at least) my left shoulder (I am left handed)
There is significant pain (5-6 out of 10) on the anterior and posterior side of my deltoid when I lift any thing over 3 pounds, although I can probably lift heavier stuff.
I can easily lift my arm above my head with just slight pain.
Probably just a strain, any body think it is likely worse?
Any advice other than ice, rest and 7-10 days of ibuprofen?
Thanks much!

do the rule of thumb thing...
lay off the same number of days as it takes to become pain free from the time of the injury, resume the activity (gradually).
If the pain is still there then seek professional advice.
However, if you can't sleep because of the pain, you should probably go and see a professional...
Be aware when you do resume climbing if you have feelings like worrying about the stability of the joint... if so, then seek professional advice.
Otherwise, try to be kinder to your body coming off the couch... at least in the future. To paraphrase Ed Viesters on getting in shape: "don't ever get on the couch."

Thanks Ed,
I have been active lately, just not climbing. I had only climbed twice in 6 weeks prior.
Thanks Locker, I already tried amputation and it didn't help...:)

Ezra, very difficult to diagnose virtually and probably wrong to try.
"7-10 days of ibuprofen" will not improve the recovery of a soft-tissue injury (Muscle or tendon strain, ligament sprain). At best, it will give mild pain relief. It may have a deleterious effect on the quality of the repair.
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, such as Ibuprofen, also kill thousands of people a year through bleeding stomach ulcers.
Paracetamol is similarly effective as a pain reliever and it's side-effects tend to be less common and less serious.

Can you place your hand behind your back? If not it could be rotater problems.

Duncan,
Thanks for the warning, I won't exceed 7 days, virtually no risk of ulcer if you don't exceed 7 days. I have seen bleeding stomach ulcers in patients who exceed 10 days also. Duncan, what data are you refering to when you say it may have deleterious effects on the repair? Sports med docs routinely do the 7-10 days of ibuprofen with many muscle/tenson injuries in the states.
Double D - I have full range of motion, but have minimal discomfort when raising above my shoulder level with no weight and pretty significant pain (5-6 out of 10) if I lift more than a couple pounds above my head.
Probably a grade 1 or at the low end of grade 2 tendon strain, I think.

One animal study here.
I don't have full library access at present, but I'll get back with more examples.

Thanks Duncan,
Some of the articles at the right of the Pub Med screen on the link support what you say.
Cox-2 inhibitors definatately seem out, although some studies say ibuprofen actually may improve healing in the early phase. In any case thanks for doing the search and raising the question.
Best
