A little Christmas eve tale...
I snuck out early while my kids and wife slept, supposed to rain crazy here in California today and tomorrow. I love it when I can defy the forecasters and sneak one in. I drove to an obscure, small, private, and remote crag I created for my own indulgence. I started off down the trail that leads up the narrow slot canyon and bam... something out of a horror movie was laying right there on the trail.
Jawbones, ribs, leg bones, hooves, skull, and a stench so awful I had to pinch my nose. It looked like it blew up, pieces everywhere. It was fresh. These weren't old, bleached-out bones you find in a cow pasture sometimes. This thing had been ripped apart and eaten.
I looked up the shadowy canyon beyond. The dark ominous clouds wrestled the sun and barred it from rising. An icy wind blew. A chill tip-toed up my neck.
"How bad do I want to climb today?"
I had my solo set up: mini-traxions, short rope, harness, shoes, and some pro.
But no dog. Damn.
Mental note to self: Add dog to rack.
I backed away and drove home... foiled by a blip in the food chain.
Guess who was waiting for me in the driveway... like some telepathic message had beat me home.
Man's best friend indeed.

Maybe one of Rokjox's wolf packs? They ate ALL the Elk in Idaho.
Now they're hungry.

hey there tom... see... there are times when a man's instincts take over... and you know that you belong home...
dog knew it too... a good "bearing witness"...
edit: good thing, too, that dog WAS home, though... he/she may have tried to follow a pretty hard-bad trail and met up with something worse...
