I've just been told I may be heading to Batam for a bit. I've seen posts on here from someone in Singapore and I'm sure plenty of Taco standers have been in the Malaysia/Indonesia area. Can anyone give me any gud advice? Where do I climb??

Not too many options for climbing in Singapore. It think the highest point above sea level is about 100ft +/-
There is a granite quarry (Dairy Farm Quarry) that is technically closed due to rockfall, but you may find some people there to climb with. I spent a day there with some locals who didn't speak english and it was pretty fun. Just showed up with my shoes and made friends. Mostly (all?) bolted, 30-50 feet.
If its raining, there are 3 or so gyms around the city that are not great, but will get the job done.
If you're feeling more adventurous, there is some great sport climbing near Kuala Lumpur. There is a guide book available for this region - i picked up a copy in one of the climbing gyms. I have not been, but read some good things.

Singapore struck me as not much different than any big city, very westernized other than the smoke puking mopeds and contruction scafolding that was little more than bamboo lashed together with some sort of twine.

I used to live in Singapore, and I can't think of a single place on the island to climb. Some have already mentioned crossing over to Malaysia. That seems reasonable to me; good luck.

Thanks for all the advice so far. Due to being out on the rock/ice and the holidays I'm not online very often. Going climbing here is an all day deal.
Wbraun, I'm actually working on my water climbing technique. I figure if I can master climbing on water I can start my own cult. If I do find rock I may not remember where it is either...
I'll actually be living in Batam. Getting to johor will be easy and when I work out time off I'll try to get to borneo or bali or somewhere. If it happens I'll be leaving in a month or so and staying around 6mos. Might try to jump over to India at the end. Sikkim or something. Who knows. I was posting because I remember seeing pics of people deep water soloing or bouldering around malaysia.

Water Snakes! Used to live there too. Waterskiied right over one in the bay.
Was there when they filmed a Hawaii 5-O episode. Ha! Jack Lord and his hair.
I can't recall any rock there....save perhaps the cable car area?
Kota Kinabalu was mentioned and that would be granite.
Very surreal environment.
Werner, when were you there?
I finished highschool in Singapore '78.
Got to speak with Largo and Bridwell separataly once regarding the area and their exploits in the region.
