McCain is a reactionary. He has no idea what to do and is frantically trying to find some sort of political lever. It's moving way too fast for the old man.

McCain's spinmeisters are saying this is what he has always done: put country first.
What a dickhead . . .

Bob Cesca on HufPo sums up the strategy we saw all last week:
"Blurt Out Random Crap!"
The Real McCain is rapidly coming into focus for those in the middle. McRage. McLiar. McPanderer. McIncompetent. McBush. And the Obama campaign only needs to tweak these frames. After all, the McCain campaign is doing all of the heavy lifting by itself.
And as we witnessed with the Zapatero episode, as soon as Senator McCain blurts out random crap, his staff scrambles onto the stage with pronouncements and excuses so as to make it seem as if McCain meant to say what he said -- a routine which only serves to compound the farcical nature of it all.
So it comes as no surprise that the McCain-Palin strategy on the economic crisis is to -- that's right! -- blurt out random crap.

I'm surprised that only 10% support this.
Now granted, this is a very early poll and attitudes will likely change. But I think it shows that there is enormous doubt that he should bail like this.

He must've fired Rove (in order to have been allowed by his campaign to do this).
...I think he's just too tired to do it all and needs another nap.

McCain should use Palin as his stand-in.
She has Alaska in such good shape that she can afford to take time off.

I'm laughing my *&s off about this.
Obama said today, you have to be able to do more than one thing at a time if you are going to be the POTUS. Obama can campaign, help with the economic crisis, and debate nearly all at the same time. He also said today, the debate should occur as planned on Friday.
I agree. It is just a stall tactic as Bruno above has stated. It is sooooooo transparent.
I can just see it now, McLame (or McSame) says, "Hey can we postpone the debates until Nov. 5th? Is that possible? That's when it will work for me."
Obama/Biden are gonna wipe the floor with McLame/Failin. I can't wait.

In july this year Reid said this about a similar situation where Obama voted on a bill and McCain was campaigning...
""I should mention how glad my fellow Democrats and I were to have our nominee for president here to vote on these important bills. Senator Obama has come to work and taken tough stands. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for Senator McCain," Reid said. "Perhaps taking tough stands on important issues is not part of Senator McCain's campaign strategy. Perhaps he's just too busy on the campaign trail to do his day job."
Does he want it both ways?

I am inclined to agree with you Klimmer. Yea, I saw Obama's speech. What amazing self control Obama must have in order to deliver that line with deadpan sobriety. I too cannot-stop-laughing!!!!

Good point Chaz, as a Demo I invite gidget to be McSames's stand-in.
Would it make any difference at this point?

From k-man's link above, after Reid told McCain that showing up in DC would not be helpful:
A source close to Reid said McCain didn't have much to say after that. Reid, the source says, thinks McCain's maneuver is a gimmick born from bad poll numbers and the fact that "debate prep must not be going very well."

This is nothing more than an attempt to appear "presidential" while copping out of a debate that he is going to get creamed in. The debates aren't for our entertainment, but to question and probe into how the candidates can handle themselves. Now more than ever the debates should go on.
I mean seriously....does McCain have some secret plan to save the economy that he just HAS to rush back to DC to implement?

Bluey,
July was a long time ago - they hadn't even had the conventions yet. Here we are with only about 5 weeks until election day so it's a bit more pressing that we hear from the candidates on these specific topics.
Now the McCain team is trying to postpone the VP debate as well. Please don't tell me it's because Sarah needs to go to Washington to solve the economic crisis.

Now it looks like they want to postpone the VP debate too:
http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/09/24/mccain-camp-to-propose-postponing-vp-debate/
My guess, for the VP debate, all questions must be submitted a week ahead
of time, and each contestant can use a 5x7 card for each question "asked."
Time limit on the answers: 30 seconds, with no follow up questions.
Hey, in Alaska, 30 seconds is a lot of time! Why, you could dress half a moose in that time (in a mini skirt, that is).
