New series in the SacBee on the effects of global warming in the Sierras. There isn't anything new here, but it's well-written with some good photos.

Mr. Willoughby - Hal lives right up the street from us, I know him pretty well. Definitely an absolute gentleman. He must be pushing about 75 or so these days, and last spring when our non-profit organization was moving to a new office, Hal showed up with his truck and his work gloves on, and promptly started slinging around file cabinets and office chairs like a man 1/3 his age.

I have seen some "comparative" photos of Sierra Glaciers that I find to be completely misleading; a photo of the Middle Pal Glacier last year (2007), for instance, would have looked like it had shrunk by 50% from just the year before, because 2006 had about 200% of "average" snowfall and 2007 had about 20%. I climbed Middle Pal in each year so I got to experience the difference first hand - in '06 I put my crampons on at the south end of Finger Lake and left them on until I reached the face, in '07 we only needed crampons in two shady chutes and the glacier itself was covered by extremely sun-affected snow. And that was 5 weeks earlier in the year.

So it seems like we need to be careful if we take some of this as "evidence" of any long-term climate change.

The Sierra Nevada Alliance has been giving a presentation this year throughout the region (Eastside and West) regarding Climate Change and the Sierra. They include some "comparative" photos, and I think one of them is of Lyell. You can probably find the presentation materials on their website. But I noticed that their "after" photo was from 2006.

dmalloy - second sentence of that article puts him at 81. What a great guy! Man, does he have some stories - road tripping with his dad back when he was tyke (a long, long time ago!!), skiing from Onion Valley into downtown Independence back in the 50s, scrambling around with Smoke Blanchard, walking/hiking all over the damn place, and at 81 he's still getting after it. Hal Klieforth is the coolest!

thank you for posting that link. the sacramento bee has a good track record when it comes reporting on environmental issues. the series on hetch hetchy comes to mind. was fortunate to see the author of that series speak in one of my natural history courses a couple years ago.
