I will be going to Crete at the end of the week for a week. Does anybody know of the climbing there and any advice. There are a couple of websites but perhaps some suggestions would be of help.

Thanks

Patrick

Bump.

Has anybody on the forum climbed there? Since I will only have a week, and most of it spent with my other half and looking at the rich historical sites, I probably will only have one day (maybe two) to climb (boulder and free solo though I will take my harness in case I run into some climbers who will let me tie in with them).

Therefore, if there is an area that is primo over one that is choss, it would be handy to know. Any suggestions?

I will bump this a couple of more times until Wednesday night and if there are no suggestions delete it Thursday before we fly out of Dublin.

I'll assume you've seen this website:

http://www.climbincrete.com/english/climbing/index.php

I was there for a week in April of 2006 but was for a canyoneering rendezvous. I met a few of the local climbers and they gave me some beta but I never made it to the nearby areas, and, also didn't see anyone climbing. I don't think there's a climbing scene there, at all. Ie, you'd have a problem just hooking up with random folks out climbing.

The canyons (Ha Gorge especially) are pretty neat. Given the heat right now, I'd opt for that over any rock climbing (90F?).

Along with Ha we did Arvi, Paranimfi and Kaviovsiou and another I can't recall the name of. These ranged from 23 rappels up to 82m in length. Pretty fun stuff. Based out of Myrtos on the south side of the island. I think there's a euro canyon beta database with detailed descriptions of the canyons if you're interested.

Cheers,

Thanks Brian, I was thinking about the heat.

Yes, I did surf a bit on that website. What was the rock like in the canyons?

Varied from bomber and unbelievable looking, to pretty crappy.

Fair bit of potential there (understatement).

I think someone with a bit of alpine climbing saavy, especially in limestone areas in Europe, might have some fun exploring some of the rock there. Didn't seem to be a strong local rock climbing scene pushing much in the way of route development. Be a great place to explore.

Watch out for the goats. They graze on the step cliff faces and are known to knock rocks down.

Thanks people. Brian, I didn't even think about the goats but from the looks of that website I'll probably be climbing on or near the coast.
