Always liked this photo... if the tree is vertical then he must be... but can trees grow horizontally? (Before someone begins to tell me, "of course they can. Trees are a diverse species of ... whoops lost me. I'm just posting a fun picture.)

The rope has a classical catenary shape - not straight.
Therefore we know that the rope is not hanging straight down and is in fact under tension. Straight down is perpendicular to the middle of the rope. So the tree is growing out and up from the rock.
(Obviously if photo is not 'shopped or cropped the camera was oriented with vertical axis parallel to tree.)

LOL. I just realized. I made the assumption that the line is parallel to the film!
It is also possible that this picture was taken from above the tree, but not directly above the rope, so that the catenary appears flatter (higher tension) than it really is. That makes it hard to imagine why the "ground" is not in the picture.
If this is the case then the climber is below the tree. Hard to know since it is a projection onto film whether the tree is growing straight out, slightly up, or even slightly down.
If camera is below and left of the tree, sky orientation makes more sense. Tree is then growing up, but not vertical.
(Also interesting is that the camera is focused much closer than the apparent subject of the photo.)

There are NO tricks in this photo.
It was taken on a FA in the Shuteye Ridge area of California. I was at the belay looking upward to the leader who found this tree growing almost horizontal. He simply walked out on it. No tricks, no plan, just goofin' on the rock like good ol' boys.

Do I get a postcard for getting it right on my third "guess"?
Not familiar with this route. How does the rope get from leader to belayer without being in the picture in the foreground?

You know, that's weird... I never notice the lack of rope! Seems to me we traversed left then back right. It's been a few years since this was taken so please excuse my dead brain cells.
