I haven't heard anything really positive about the boy scouts in a long time now. It's kinda sad really, they were once a relevant institution.

I wouldn't give up on the boy scouts so easily. There is still a lot of good being done. We had a thread here on the taco a few years back where we donated gear to a climber who was teaching his pack to climb. The boy scouts are a large organization and there is a difference between what they condone as a group, and what happens in individual cases. I doubt the boy scouts as a whole would condone this action.

Maybe you should think a bit about what types of events get news coverage.
I don't have an opinion on scouts one way or the other, but basing your view on what you hear in the press shows a certain lack of critical judgment.
Hint: if this is tough for you to figure out, consider how likely it is that a group of scouts went hiking, had a good time, and learned a little about nature will make the news.

they may have been relevant in the post war beaver cleaver age, but by the 70's they were a depository for sadistic PTSD Vietnam vets posing as 'leaders' reliving their glory days...at least in my troop.

At the risk of being ostracized and defamed, was this stone 'iconic' in some way?
Are the rocks signed in some way indicating 'don't touch'?
I haven't been there yet.

The Boy Scouts are one hell of a good organization and yes they do teach kids good values.
I could see how you would agree if you share those values, I personally do not. I am a militant atheist and I do boycott any organization that does not recognize gheys as equal human animals. So I will ask again, do they still require religion and do they accept gheys yet? Has nothing to do with what I hear in the news, has all to do with what is written in the boy scouts own policy documents.

Not in the media, you haven't...the only thing that makes the news is the latest BSA bullsh#t- well-deserved negative attention, in my book.
However, there is lots of positive things happening in many troops all the time- many of them are well-run, and are instilling very useful values into young people. The Scouts I see in various courses I teach (esp. Eagle Scouts) are usually really good kids with a bright future.

Not every troop is a jackbooted, Christian-raving, homophobic Lord of the Flies (some are, though).
Some of them are lead by people who don't subscribe to such extremism, and instead live & teach the core values that all people agree on.
You know, Ron...kind of like a moderate Republican? (Not that such a thing exists anymore)
Nah...you wouldn't understand such a thing.
