Found this on BusinessInsider today. I consider it a reliable source.
A lawyer researching the reposting of images/etc. that were posted without permission discovered that US copyright law allows
Copyrighted work can only be used without permission when someone is criticizing it, commenting on it, reporting on it, teaching about it, or conducting research.
The actual language from the law:
Specifically, 17 U.S.C. §107 states that “the fair use of a copyrighted work … for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship or research, is not an infringement of copyright.”
So I guess we can repost images without permission as long as we write some brief comment about them. Interesting.

I would assert that anything posted here can be construed as "news."
In the case of any law being violated, it only matters to the extent that the offended party is willing (and financially able) to pursue it as a civil matter or if it's a criminal matter, the DA must be willing to risk their record of wins/losses to take on the case.

HaHaHa! But there sure is plenty of 'criticism', eh?

I believe that this pertains to short passages and excerpts. It's not my understanding that you can, for instance, reprint a best selling thriller here, and add a few lines about not liking it, and not be in violation of something or another. Intellectual property is valuable and can't be trotted out for nothing anymore than you can pirate videos.

Most people don't think posting an image online is copyright infringement. Unless, of course, the poster states or implies it is their own image.
Common courtesy tells the decent person that, for example, if they post a beautiful image of El Cap in golden hour that was taken by somebody else, they would make note of that fact when posting the image.
There have been a couple instances here where people posted long passages written by another without crediting the source, and even when people complimented them on the matter didn't mention it was not their work.
That's just bizarre.

I've never read a long passage on the taco so I wouldn't know.
