hey everyone,
a couple months ago, I moved from CA to CO (Fort Collins). I'll likely be here for about two more years. That is, until the funding for my position runs out.
Even though I started climbing on the east coast (Gunks, RRG, Seneca, Ragged Mt.), the bulk of my experience is in CA, with only a little bit of experience climbing in CO (Garden of the Gods, Shelf Rd., South Platte). As such, I have dreams of tackling climbs at many of the classic areas around here (Eldo, Lumpy Ridge, Vedauwoo, but also Indian Creek, maybe the Black Canyon, etc.).
the Taco is replete with great stories of these areas, but what about the CO backcountry? What are some of your favorite routes? In other words, if you had 2 years, what would you do?

My answer: Rocky Mountain National Park, including Longs Peak.
Examples: Petit Grepon, Spearhead, Sharkstooth, etc., in addition to the myriad of East Face routes on Longs.

RMNP, "The Park"
Has a lifetime of alpine climbing from snow routes to sunny dry rock routes.
"The Voo" In Wyoming is great, but very bold ratings.
Lumpy for a feel of the Park,
Eldo for when it's too cold for any of the rest....

The only "problem" with that tick list is that the standard rock climbing season for most/all of those RMNP routes is about 2 months :(
Colorado climbing is great of course, but the "high peaks" are more like the icing on the cake that is (for Front Range) Eldo, BoCan and all other canyons (St. Vrain, Clear Creak, and others), maybe Splatte and Flatirions, and other places where you can climb in more than July and August.
Edit: I missed the point of the thread title by concentrating on the text of the post, sorry (but backcountry isn't same thing as alpine).

I'd add to the previous RMNP list the South Ridge on Notch Top.
Also, Mt. Evans is alpine due to its altitude, and it has some amazing long rock routes - less than an hour hike to the top, rap in and climb out, and around 45 minutes back to the car.
