I made this thread for Nick from Brazil.
He had his haul bag stolen from a bear box in Camp 4. He said approximately $3000.00 retail value worth of his cams and gear were in the bag.
He is asking for people to be aware of anyone trying to sell his gear.
He said his stuff was unmarked, oops.
This happened to him approximately 3 days ago, he said.

What a huge bummer to be far away from home and have all your stuff stolen.
Speaking of marking gear. I just use some paint. But thats easily removed. Do people etch gear with a scribe?

So what's the best Official Solution [legit according to Park Authorities] for guys like Nick [and me] who climb in Yosemite, but don't have wheels into which we can lock our stuff?

Are the bear boxes lockable?
I pledge $100 to the legal defense fund of anyone arrested for cutting off the thief's hand or "offense" of a similar nature.

Piton Ron
They are lockable but they say if you lock them they will cut the locks off and impound your stuff.

Ron,
The boxes are ostensibley to be "shared" by all c4 users for that particular site.
winter time, you could probably lock it and no one would care. Summer with the crowds....

They believe that campground management will lose control of the boxes. Some people will use the boxes for their gear storage and not be registered as camping in the campground.
In laymans terms, they know a lot of the out of bounds dirtbags will use these as their base for months at a time.
This is it in a nutshell and that's what happened in the past when they were locked.
Munge brought up the other issue of sharing of the boxes in the individual sites .

Why should the nonclimbing public pay.
Let the Access Fund buy 'em. Then rent 'em to climbers. Voila! Paid for.

There ARE rentable lockers behind the info kiosk at Curry.
75 cents, will hold a grade 5 bag.

Yes Darnell there are.
There should be some at Camp 4 too, and they should be rentable for non climbers too Ron.

Then the public SHOULD buy them (but they could easily turn a profit!)

I hope that Nick's gear was not stolen.
I am quite keen on Nick as he is a very nice fellow.
Two years ago, when Nick and I were two of a five man team doing a push on the NA wall, Nick had $500 stole.
Could not happen to a nicer person, now this?
Hang in there Nicky!!
I will buy you pizza's when I come out in a few weeks.
