Which are the best suggested retail shops off of I5 South of the 49th Parrallel ? I still need a few items for my up coming winter USA road trip, specifically am looking for a good price on size 44.5 Trango Extremes.

I am trying to avoid online shopping, REI, MEC and support the little guy, as I usually do.

Outdoor Research retail outlet in Seattle is on my list. But I also need to find some decent insoles for my mountain boot collection, thin ones, and other hard to find little bits and pieces. Isn't there a good shop in Bellingham for specialty mountaineering gear ?

Hi Bruce

There are at least a couple of decent non-chain climbing shops in Seattle

Feathered Friends is so close to I-5 you can practically spit that far:
119 Yale Ave N, 206-292-2210 www.featheredfriends.com

Second Ascent is in Ballard, probably 15 minutes from I-5:
5209 Ballard Ave, 800-485-6516 www.secondascent.com

Edit: And how could I have forgotten Pro Mountain Sports (Jim Nelson's shop, which is about five minutes off I-5
5625 University Way Northeast, 206-522-1627, www.promountainsports.com

Pro Mountain Sports is about as small & independent as you can get; with expert advice from folks who actually climb. Only a couple of minutes off I-5. They have Trango's in stock usually.
