We had some minor miracles on Rainier this weekend. I spent Monday on this mission which found Mr. Kim. He was in great shape despite spending two bitter, stormy nights out in the filed without overnight gear. While looking for him, a team came upon two other snowshoers who witnessed the accident and hearing from Mr. Kim;s group that he was OK, decided to head back to Paradise and got lost. They also spent two nights out with no little gear, but lots of food and used the man's shiney new Christmas present, a snow shovel. They made a snow cave each night. The park employees so needed this boost to their morale following the shooting over the New Year. Remarkable that all drove home with no apparent injuries beyond mild hypothermia.

As the weather deteriorated, the park is concerned about two climbing parties high on the mountain. We hope that they are snug in their tents, in a cave, or made it to the Muir shelter. Hope they find the radio at Muir and let all know that they are OK and staying put until conditions improve - and that won't be for several days.

The MRA sent in 70 people from a variety of units from Portland to Seattle, Olympics, Tacoma, Central (Yakima)and the Volcano Rescue Team. I'm probably forgetting somebody, but it was a strong showing for a Park that really goes out of its way for climbers and the MRA. The National Park could not have treated us better - constantly plowing the road, escorting all teams to their assignments, providing hot breakfast and dinner, finding lodging for folks too toasted to drive home that nigh, providing special avvy reports, ........

Thanks to Seamstress and crew for going out in this rager of a storm and bringing folks home! It is still storming hard, and tons more snow expected over the next few days. Hard to imagine climbers going up on Rainier into this forecast, and making a summit push. Seems more like they are going up just to hole up in a snow cave for the fun of it.

hey there say, seamstress!! wonderful! thanks for sharing... did not get to see much last night... been dropping in and out very fast...
say, i had read about mr. kim...
thanks for all the hard work that you all do... and
may you continually have the good lord's grace in your midst:
a hard job, you all have... but one so very special and dear to our hearts...
god bless....
thanks again... i loved the "good news from rainier" title, :)
edit:
wow, a much better report than the one i saw... this is more detail, as to who the man was, etc...
i liked this part:
By late Sunday, Kim's family members admit they had nearly lost all hope -- but not him. Kim stayed warm by marching in place and singing old time gospel - "Amazing Grace" - in Korean
he sure kept busy, and kept his spirits up, :)
