NTSB recommends full ban on use of cell phones while driving
By Mike M. Ahlers, CNN
updated 5:45 PM EST, Tue December 13, 2011
Washington (CNN) -- A federal safety board called Tuesday for a nationwide ban on the use of cell phones and text messaging devices while driving.
The recommendation is the most far-reaching yet by the National Transportation Safety Board, which in the past 10 years has increasingly sought to limit the use of portable electronic devices -- recommending bans for novice drivers, school bus drivers and commercial truckers. Tuesday's recommendation, if adopted by states, would outlaw non-emergency phone calls and texting by operators of every vehicle on the road.
It would apply to hands-free as well as hand-held devices, but devices installed in the vehicle by the manufacturer would be allowed, the NTSB said.

Say a LEO observed you talking to yourself in your car, perhaps practicing
a training speech you'll be giving to police recruits that day but he thinks you're on speaker with your cell phone, so he pulls you over and gives you the $500 ticket disbelieving your story.

Don't like Nanny States and govt interference and such...but with half the nitwits in Los Angeles texting while they drive--enuff is enuff
isn't it already illegal in California? It is in Washington state. As a matter of fact it is now a primary offense. When they made it a secondary (can't be pulled over for it) it made so little difference that they made it a primary offense.

Yes, Cali (and a few other states) have created laws restricting various uses of cell phones. The NTSB's position recommends that every state create laws that restrict all use of cell phones, including texting, web surfing, email, and voice...even with a hands-free device (unless it's a factory-installed vehicle system).
I'm anti-vehicle-cell phone use as many (and sometimes just as guilty), but the NTSB's position does seem pretty extreme...

Someone once told me "Rules are for people who need rules."
I think some people CAN use a phone while driving. But there
s enough who cannot that - those idiots NEED rules to at least cut DOWN on the accidents caused because of using phone while driving.
I'd like to see the law be that cel phones may only be used inside cubicle-like spaces, to allow for both the callers privacy and the general publics sanity. This space would, ideally, be rectangular in shape, about 7 feet X by 2.5 feet X 2.5 feet, and have an accordian folding, door. They should be handily located on nearly every street corner in america.....
Okay - maybe that's going to far. How about, instead of car=pool lanes, we have texting lanes? Put a 3 foot cement barrier up between that lane and the rest of us and let the idjets have at it.

Nanny state and capitalism.
Automobiles who can sell cars with these devices built in will win.
I fear for my life in my parent's cars as they try (generally unsuccessfully) to use the darn things. They spend more time looking at the buttons trying to figure out what is going on than they do looking at the road.

There's the rub. So talking on GMC's or Ford's cell phone is safer than an after market (hands free)?
Looks like a slice of pork for the auto-industry.
Nay, to the idiot wind from the nanny state.

Hey sometimes sarcasm doesnt come across too well online. I abhor the nanny state, my favorite YouTube channel is reason tv cuz they have a "nanny of the month" award.
I reject all state intervention in my life, I can save for my retirement, drive a reasonable speed, smoke what i deem acceptable, and build my own house safely.
And I am loving life!

Against the Ban! This is just another way of f-n with us and stealing our hard earned money when we get a $450.00 ticket for talking on your cell phone. Nanny f-n State.
I recently goot a blue tooth. I swear the thing is way more dangerous. Phone rings, find head set, find phone, answer phone, adjust head set, swerve into other lane.....
Just let me answer my phone.

The amount of 'business' that people conduct via cellphones while commuting is simply enormous.
It goes without saying that the economy will suffer if Obama succeeds in
creating such a game changing upheaval in how business operates here in America.
Also the wireless carriers will suffer and in retaliation stop all campaign contribution$ to politicians that support a law that prohibits people from using their products while in cars.
This alone may end the careers of the NTSB geeks who were naive enough to spout this idea in public.

Is he working for the Chinese? Inquiring minds want to know.

It's about F'n time! Anyone who thinks they can drive safely and talk, let alone text, hasn't read much on how the brain works while on a cell phone. Cell phones and the idiots who talk and drive, KILL people.

hey there say, all.... i have seen many folks do awful things while looking at their phones... (for instance, when you are stopped at four-way stops, etc, to see who goes next... )... and when you are a non-driver, and you see them 'oblivious to other cars' as they drive by...
very sad that folks desire for self-entertainment, etc, gets them to neglect the responsibiity of driving... :(
well, i'm not sure what to think... but i'm leaning towards jody's mention of "secondary"...
i mean, like if can prove or learn for sure that the phone-neglence made the driver neglegent, then there should be a very high restitution, or something? to the inocent.... for the harm that the other PERPOSELY did, (it is a "knowing full well" thing, that full attention can not be on the road, while texting, etc...)
but, as i said, i am just learning and thinking about all this...
