The route for 2012 was announced today:

http://www.amgentourofcalifornia.com/docroot/media/2012/ATOC-Detailed-Map-2012.pdf

I hope the Baldy stage is an actual mountain top finish. We know the Big Bear stage ends with about ten miles of dead-flat road - with a tail-wind, no less.

Time trial in Bakersfield? Not exactly Solvang, is it?

Looks like they'll be racing down the coast from San Francisco to Santa Cruz. I think that's the most scenic stretch of the entire West Coast.

The costal stages were the shiz last year for scenery. Even Sherwin and Ligget were impressed.

Not clear where the finish will be in Santa Cruz which could determine the exact route and final climb. Capitola is trying hard to get the stage which could make the logistics a bit interesting.

Yes, the Bonny Doon final climb is well known, but if the stage does finish in, say, Capitola that opens up the potential for a lot of interesting roads.

Last year, when I was the announcer for the Etape du California, I met the Tour of California's technical director and I was impressed at his knowledge of all the smaller roads throughout California. Rest assured that they will choose an interesting route into Santa Cruz.

BTW, I am guessing that they will keep the Mt. Baldy stage as it was last year just that the Ontario versus Claremont start adds a bit of easier riding to the front end of the stage. The steep climbing on Mt. Baldy begins pretty low down on the climb and this should allow for a bit better warmup.
