Interesting that you posted that here...

I haven't sailed in about 11 years and miss it...maybe this summer I'll get back out. I know there's a few of us here on Supertopo. How is Paia these days?!

Hi Crusher,
Paia is going through some changes but I think for the most part it is positive change.
I really like this forum and it seems to reach a very eclectic audience.
Back in the early 70's I lived in Eldorado Canyon and I had a few friends that surfed and it was always cool to talk about our surfing trips. We would often combine a climbing trip with a surfing trip.

I have posted ocean related issues on other climbing forums and had very good response so I'm bringing a bit of it to SuperTopo.

I think that it was Y.C. that said something like,"I am glad that there are rocks to climb or else we would all be surfers!"

After 30 years of mostly climbing, my surfing skills had not developed to my satisfaction, so I moved from Colorado and made a full transition over to surfing and wave sailing. About a decade ago I moved to Maui where I can surf and wave sail every day.

My friend Sam Bittner is the organizer of The American Windsurfing Tour and I am proud to help get the news out to as many folks as I can.
We have allot of very prestigious people and companies showing allot of interest and support in bringing the sport back into the mainstream where it belongs!

Good luck with it all
Coming from a very unprestigous background of geting worked on by the Columbia river I always admired the folks who could go out and sail in the break.

Hey , tell me more , I'm a kiteboarder now , but I have been a Hookipa windsurfer for 20 years prior to kiteboarding, maybe I will come ot of retirement for this one . Just looked at the website, do you have to be a pro to compete? Who's in it??? Are there prizes? [photoid=194777]

Hi kitergirl,
The American Windsurf Tour will be divided into categories so the competitor will be competing with sailors of the same gender , age, and abilities.
The divisions will range from first time amateur competitors all the way up to expert. There are several past PWA World Champions competing.

That's a great photo of you jumping!

I am sure that you will find the perfect slot for your qualifications.
Register now and be part of this exciting re- birth of competitive wave sailing.

BTW: I just found out from Sam Bittner that the gates are now wide open for the Maui, Pistol River Cape Hatteras, and San Carlos events. We are ironing out details with the California Parks for the Santa Cruz event but it‘s only a matter of time.

Oh, that sounds great, I am gonna go practice my windsurfing today! I have a crew of girlfriends that are interested, too. Keep us updated.
I am also a great fan of Francisco Goya, it will be awesome to see him in the comp. I ride Goya sails, myself, (when I am not kiting),ha.

Fort Mental your right it is a bit off topic but it is a valid discipline in the sport of wind surfing. Perhaps some day down the line,
The American Windsurfing Tour could possibly incorporate slalom, course, and speed racing but at the moment it's all about wave sailing which in my very biased opinion
is one of the most dynamic ways to express your self in the ocean.

The video you posted of my friend Finyan Maynard breaking his own world record at the speeding ditch at Saint Maries de la Mer France is great. He was obviously very stoked.
Fenian was just in our sail loft about a week ago having his race sail repaired before leaving for a slalom event in Europe.

Kitergirl firing it up at Sprecks. Nice. Is that an Angulo board?
Do they still have the Aloha Classic and/or the O'Neil Invitational at Hookipa, or are those past history and that is what this American Windsurfing Tour of wavesailing is replacing?

Yeah, kitergirl what board are you riding in that photo of you boosting air?

studly the Aloha Classic hasn't been held since 2006 and only one other wave event has been held at Hookipa since and that was a PWA event. It just didn't have the local charm of the aloha Classic.
Lack of funding and of coarse local politics got in the way every time there was an attempt to revive the premiere wave sailing event in the world.

This year on Maui we have a new administration in office that sees the value in Windsurfing/Kiteboarding/Surfing events and has opened the gates for the American Windsurfing Tour to hold a contest the last week of October at Hookipa as their final event of the tour!

F-/[];k I don't know what board that was, that was a long time ago, the last time I went windsurfing it was on Goya Sails and Goya board. Loved the setup by the way and consider Fransisco Goya one of the coolest guys on the planet and his gear top notch. If I participate in this event I will ride Goya gear, for sure. But these days, you will find me most days, kiting and here is a more recent picture of me....this one was in Surfer Today mag!

Hay Studly that video was a great flash back to the past!
It's crazy how many of those gallant warriors are still shredding today!
Wow Francisco Goya with blond hair who would a thunk it?
Here's a photo that I shot of Mark Angulo a while back.
You can count on Mark competing in the Maui part of The American Windsurfing Tour.
He's ripping as hard as ever!
