He is describing himself. Plus we shouldn't care what an idiot thinks, it gives him too much credit.

I don't think that there is anything anyone can do or say that would vilify Werner. Pate's comments are like a lapdog walking by pissing on the Empire State building. Who cares, it certainly doesn't?

Werner needs no defense, his life (well led) and the consistency of his opinions speak for themselves. This ageist thing that crops up on ST seems to be spurred by a real fear of getting older by people who have good reason to be concerned. Getting older is obligatory (if your lucky) staying fit and climbing well is optional- it comes with a price not many are willing to pay.

Well said, Jim. I still think of the last words in Tom Patey's last song (this is from memory, so it's probably inaccurate):
"From the pitiless slabs of the Nordwand
Where the bivouc sites are few
The ghosts of the host of Old Masters
Are calling this warning to you:
'Live it up, fill your cup, have another
And sow your wild oats while you may
For the toothless old tykes of tomorrow
Were the tigers of yesterday.'"

Props to Werner. Even as a 20 something climber just starting out years ago, I knew who he was and what he contributed to the climbing world. TTT for the custodian (with the utmost respect) of Astroman!

Agreed Spider and Watusi. It works in the animal kingdom. Marginalize the bad-acting, unempathic freaks and they will suffer on their lonesome, unable to breed, unable to enjoy the protection of the group, unable to get food or much food and will wither. It’s just Darwinian.

If we are banning based on conduct, I think the behavior itself should be the issue, and not the people who are target(s).
Regardless of each of our accomplishments in life and where we have chosen to apply ourselves (or not), I think there is a baseline respect we should demand from each other based solely on our qualifications as human beings.
The motivation is to keep our social virtual community somewhat clean, much like we would want our physical community somewhat clean. There's a spectrum and different people have different tolerances for the level of clutter or trash or "art" etc. But in general, most people don't like to trip over turds and have to see it everywhere. Maybe there is a potential thread drift to define "what constitutes a turd?"
But back to my initial point... whether the target is Werner or anyone else (including Pate), the same measuring stick for behavior should be applied in my opinion.

Add another virtual hug for Werner, and Merry too! Ignore the mentally sick (Pate) as all of us normal folks luv ya bro! It's one thing to have someone get pissed and fire up another. So hat? We all get over it...usual. But Some folks like Pate take to to a real real sick droning on and on and on with mean stupid angry juvenile posts. If you could turn your head and avoid them, fine. But you can't as that's all you get form a couple of thee knuckleheads. They should STFU and move along. We at least know who Werner is, and he still climbs as seen here on Sacher last time I was in the valley and he was waiting for us to get off the climb for his turn.
Hey, anyone tell Werner it doesn't cost extra to put in more pro? LOL! Hi Werner! You rule!

And so begins the formal declaration of rules, the civilizing of the wilds, the removal of freedoms, and the destruction of that which drew us here in the first place.
Or maybe there is a middle way between totally wild mountains hosting bands of murderers and thieves, and a kiddie-park with signs that say "do not walk on the grass."
note to self: STFU, quit procrastinating, get back to work!

Three cheers for Werner Braun. I missed seeing him this time at Facelift; my own fault for not seeking him out. The few times I have met him, he has been just like the guy here online at Supertopo.

I agree with Ana: "He is describing himself. Plus we shouldn't care what an idiot thinks, it gives him too much credit."
I do see the disrespect, but I can care less, because I know Werner enough to know that this means nothing to him. He follows the word of one, and there is no nudging him off course. But I do agree, the disrespect is not really needed.
As far as I am concerned, Werners doin just fine.

If, indeed, you are fortunate to remain in good health and thus are able to expend the effort and "pay the price". Some are not . . .
