Hey I have some non climber friends in Vegas. They are looking for some good day hikes in the Red Rocks loop. Shorter hikes. Any cool stuff to check out? I was thinking about sending them up Pine Creek Canyon. I have not stopped in many of the early turn outs. Am I missing anything?

Basically 'It's all good'!
But yeah a good bang for the buck is Pine Creek.
Hiking out past Dark Shadows and further up that canyon is pretty unique this time of year with all the water.
A little shorter and closer on the loop, Sandstone Quarry. The hike to Calico tanks is nice, again because of the water.
From out of SandStone Quarry as well, Turtle head. Great views after a short but steep hike.

There's a lovely and quite short (2.5 miles round trip) walk up to Calico Tanks---there are some pictures of it in my Red Rocks Trip Report.

Turtlehead has great views. Steep, braided user-trails rather than anything official for part of the way.

The pools and grottos in the North Fork of Pine Creek Canyon require some boulder-hopping and rock-scrambling.

Both these walks might seem challenging to some hikers, especially if they are expecting to walk on a clearly delineated maintained trail. Just sayin'.

I'd recommend getting a copy of Afoot and Afield---Las Vegas and Southern Nevada, A comprehensive hiking guide, Brian Beffort, Wilderness Press, Berkeley, CA (2005).

Yeah, I'd second that Oak Creek walk....Really nice up there.
Feels wild. Well, more wild, then.

Another option is ~40mins away from the strip. Mt. Charleston area. Big contrast to RR in that is high & alpiney. Might want a jacket though...

Icebox Canyon is cozy and scenic. Really, all of the canyons are worth visiting. Scrambling through boulders up the creek beds gives lots of entertainment per mile.

A jacket plus readiness for a significant amount of snow the Spring Mountains? Here's what that area looked like in mid-March two years ago (shot from Pahrump)
