Has anyone else noticed that Irene, the original poster, has not been back? Seems odd to start a thread and not post to it. Plus, it seems kind of funny. We have all just been yacking. It must be that kind of a day.

Irene, I would steer away from a pickup for your first vehicle.
Get something with front wheel drive.
Pickup trucks are light in the rear, so be it 2 or 4 wheel drive, you will still be prone to swap ends if you enter a corner too fast, or have to dodge a deer on a slick road.
But if you like squirrel's, go for the Toyota.
Trucks are not comfortable to ride in.
If you are going to be hip hopping all over, then get a car with a good seat and a comfortable ride. This will help you to handle it if somebody else pulls some strokes.
Also, you do not want to arrive at the base of the Matterhorn all beat up from a truck ride.
Music does not sound good in a Toyota pickup with bad motor mounts.
Gas is going up, keep that in mind.
If you wait, I bet incredible deals for gas guzzleres are going to appear at the dealership.
Airbags are nice, especially for a new driver.

Do not forget to check the heater.
If you are going to be in a remote location, consider parts.
Let's say you are lighting Sobe bottles off in the Saline Valley, and one gets away from you and takes out your fuel pump.
Where the heck are you going to get a fuel pump for Brand XYZ?
The nearest help would be in Lone Pine.
Not the best place for parts.
The nearest solution would be Bakersfield, and you sure do not want to spend time there.

Irene is one of my climbing partners, and a real person who has been on this mission since the day I met her.....Those PhD's just aren't all they're made out to be, it seems....hahahah.
She's got stuff to do and isn't in a situation where she
s at home surfing the net all day like.....ummm, like I do.

The 3.0 liter toy v-6 (3 VZE) engines had a couple of problems, I don't know the exact years something like 89-93. They would occasionally blow a head gasket, but there was a recall to have them replaced. Also the exhaust manifold is a weird design with a crossover that makes the rear valves run hot and they are prone to burning.
Nobody mentioned carfax. For something like $20 you can run the vin from any car you are thinking about buying and get info on some of it's history, such as how many owners, if it was wrecked. It's not perfect, but does give some peace of mind.

Carfax is certainly lacking, but if there are some glaring issues with the vehicle, it'll at least let you know you shouldn't bother spending your $ on a mechanic inspection.

Re: carfax...depends. I just bought a vehicle yesterday after about a week of looking at about 50+ cars. Some vehicles that had been dealer serviced showed all those servicing trips on the carfax. I ended up buying a lease return that showed regular servicing intervals on the carfax report and had low (for the year) mileage. Lots of sellers are providing carfax reports to potential buyers. I didn't pay for any carfax stuff, and have no idea what they cost.
