Not sure why, but I'm under the impression that opening day is usually on a Friday. "Just in time" (for the 3-day weekend), most times. hahaha I've always figured that this has a lot to do with what Mimi thinks... It's all revenue based.
So, my vote for Friday, May 23rd still stands.

Lots of plow equipment is sitting pretty by the YI campus at the west closure. Didn't see any people around for the last few days though. The snow is melting FAST up at Crane Flat though.
Hey Julia, is there ever a chance of getting part time work at the TPR? I'm not going back to the Mobil this summer.

"Lake Tuolumne"
Opening day, 1986, July 4th weekend (I don't think 2008 is another 1986). At Budd Creek, Andy T. found a really old coin and I found a 600 year old arrowhead (estimate by YNP archeologist).

I've been skiing a few times up tioga this season. The road has been dry almost all winter up to "blue slide" The avalance path was fairly good size at the gullies just below the slide. Since TPR was not plowing this year. I'll bet the road to the gate on the East side won't take much time to clear. All in all a fairly minor snow season on the Tioga road (East Side) Cheers!

Latest Conditions From Tuolumne Back Country Rangers Jeff and Kathi
http://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/tm.htm
April 24, 2008
Weather: (April 16 to April 23)
High temperature: 59°F (April 18)
Low temperature: 6°F (April 21)
New Snow: 3 inches (April 22)
Total settled snow depth: 23 inches as of April 24
Ski Conditions and Weather: It has been a cool and windy week at Tuolumne Meadows. A series of storms have passed us by to the north, bringing many prolonged episodes of high winds and clod temperatures. We did get a few inches of new snow on Tuesday, but most of that blew away in the high winds the next day. The snow has been firm to icy in the mornings, softening somewhat in the afternoons. The Tuolumne River and most of its tributaries are now free of ice; in most spots the only way across is to use the summer trail bridges. The latest snow conditions report from the east side is that Highway 120 has been plowed from the road closure gate outside of Lee Vining up to the lower end of Tioga Lake. If all goes according to plan, Caltrans will have the road cleared and open to the public up to the park boundary at Tioga Pass for the opening day of fishing season on April 26. On our west side, skiers coming up the Snow Creek trail report that the snow line begins just above the summer trail bridge, which is about 1/2 mile above the top of the switchbacks; everything below that level has melted out. The latest report from the west end of the Tioga Road is that plow crews have cleared the first 12 miles of road east from Crane Flat.
This link shows how far they have plowed from the West Side

ok, a slightly different prediction method...
I use the data from 1998 to 2007
the average opening date for that period was June 2
take the opening dates and subtract the average date from it...
fit this difference to a quadratic in the reported snow depth (in inches) for March at Snow Flat
The standard deviation of this prediction is 5.6 days... (so plus or minus 5.6 days, roughly a two week window).
Prediction: May 24th, which is a Saturday, so Friday May 23 is likely
But I wouldn't be surprised if it was May 16th or May 30th
an additional factor in favor of May 23, the Red Sox are in town to play the A's, and I have tickets for all three games (my daughter's birthday weekend) so I won't be able to go to the Meadows on opening day this year if it is that date...

There is currently 238 cm of snow at Whistler/Blackcomb, or 94 inches. As of two days ago, there were 567 cm of snow on Mount Seymour, one of the mountains on the north shore, above Vancouver. (They had 1501 cm total this winter = 15 metres = 49 feet.) Whistler is still partly open, but Seymour is now closed for the season.

May 28th (cause too many people chose the 23rd which is just as likely)
If they don't open the high country, the valley will be Hell on Memorial Day weekend as the construction doesn't look to finish in time
