Hey High Sierra junkies, Third Pillar looks to be in prime condition:
Note Mt. Dana in the background. (I noticed there were alpinists up there today. Was it you?) These are shots from an angle you don't often see. Here's another:
Looking down on the approach descent:
That, by the way, is not a footprint there in the snow chute but a huge 5 by 10 by 5 foot deep crater made by something.
5 June 2010, route's totally clear:
Day's are super long now. Great time to get on it.

looks like you could avoid the most dangerous part of the climb (the down climb) and just ski to the base.

Did you do the route? If so, how did you approach? I imagine the plateau is covered in deep snow. I want to do the route real soon. Thanks

Enjoimx- Here's a few more pics showing the approach.
Crossed this snow bridge:
Ascended this snow field. Was pretty easy compared to the usual talus, kinda felt like cheating:
Up on the plateau, it was pretty clear. Nice and warm, too. Note Third Pillar peeking out:
I was up there not to climb Third Pillar but to explore obscurities. This appeared interesting. Too dicey for me though. Maybe after somebody gets up there to clean it of the loose stuff. :)

Did the Pillar today, it is great, perfect conditions, totally dry, nobody on the route, easy step kicking on the approach.

Nice, Franky. Was that your first time to the Pillar?
A couple more questions: Was your approach from Tioga Lake?
Did you ascend the snow field I did (shown in the picture
above) or did you take it on another way?

Yeah it was my first time on that route. The Supertopo for it is perfect, all really spot on and easy to figure out besides maybe the 2nd pitch.
We parked at Tioga Lake. The approach was great. I think we were on a similar route, but a lot of the snow has melted already I think. lots of running water in that drainage leading off of the plateau.

If you have a copy, the Peter Croft variation of one of the lower pitches is amazing. Does not change the grade and the quality of climbing is really great!
