And then remembers he forgot his chute.

from ttips:

"This is one of the coolest bridges, because of location - on the Old Donner Pass Highway - as well as the spectacular Sierra Views and views of Donner Lake and Donner Pass on Route 80.

These are some amazing shots. A bear was walking across Rainbow Bridge (Old Hwy 40 at Donner Summit, Truckee) on Saturday when two cars also crossing the bridge scared the bear into jumping over the edge of the bridge. Somehow the bear caught the ledge and was able to pull itself to safety. Authorities decided that nothing could be done to help Saturday night so they returned Sunday morning to find the bear sound asleep on the ledge. After securing a net under the bridge the bear was tranquilized, fell into the net, lowered, then woke up and walked out of the net."

Cool!!!

Note by comparing the 1st and 2nd photos that the bear
does not have a bomber finger hold with which to hold
that stance. Don't know how well I could have held it,
especially given the coat of grit that must be there.
Woah!

I've heard they ride uni-cycles, and given that it took
me months to learn, I see some bad-assed-ness.

But that last photo looks like it could be the LAST!

Bears remind me of Daisy, my dog. So, i am glad that he was alright. By look on his face lets hope he didn't become addicted to tranq darts.

So humans are not the only animals that do silly things... God, I know that feeling! Gives new meaning to the word "troll" under the bridge.

Ouch needs to get a hold of this!

I wonder if he had one of those dreams where he was falling and knew was going to die - but woke up just before he hit.

Must have been scary, but he didn't have much choice than to just grin and bear it.

We drove right over top the rescue as it was happening that day on the way to the boulders. I didn't know what was going on until a bit later, otherwise I would have stopped for sure! Even had my photo gear with me....

Glad it worked out OK for the bear in the end, bet he was just a little bit freaked out.

WOW! crazy! what awesome photo documentation of this story! really made my day for sure. :-)

I just came back from living in southern Germany, and last year there was a bear shot and killed by farmers there (BRUNO, i think was his name) for eating about 2 sheep....and being a "threat" to the community...so sad how it all ended. The saddest part is that the farmers where given permission to hunt and kill the Bear. :-(

What a sharp contrast to what we do here in the U.S.

Peace

heres an article about that if anyone is interested with how they deal with bears in Germany. :-( We are lucky in CA to have laws to protect these beautiful beasts.

Jilli, I remember reading about Bruno when it was going on. Apparently it was the first wild bear in Germany for 100 years or something. Wandered in from the Alps, I think.

It's really sad that they killed him. I think they just weren't accustomed to how to deal with 'intruding' bears. They should have contacted someone with experience in relocating bears successfully (the U.S.). It really bummed me out when I heard the killed him. It was a crying shame for sure.
