Check it out: http://www.tcm.com/video/videoPlayer/?cid=141875&titleId=400726

It has everything including a leader fall, a woman screaming, and a base jumper.

O....M.....G....

"Call me crazy, but there seems to be something wrong with their technique," the announcer (had to be Groucho Marx) exclaims, as the token woman (ie Barbie Doll Screamer) uses the dumfus from the Bronx as a human stepping stone. Ya think?

Now I see why the Sierra Club no longer supports rock climbing...I'm wondering how many of their members died trying to emulate this "How To" piece of lunacy.

That's pretty impressive for 1938!

I think it's cool that climbing has had woman participating since the early days.

That is really an imfamous missing movie that only surfaced a few months ago.

It had disapeared for 60 years or so.

The lodge at Baldy is still there. SGV locals will recognize San Antonio Falls. The rest of the footage is Tahquitz and Stoney Point.

The Producer stiffed the actors. The climbers never got paid.

IMDb lists the actor/climbers as Arthur Johnson, William Rice, and James Smith. I would guess that these guys were active climbers in SC in the 30's. Anyone know any thing about them?

L,

Actually the Sierra club regularly practiced roped falls in order to learn how to createa dynamic belay. All the techniques you saw there were "de riguor."

1938... same year at tahquitz that the Mechanics Route was put up. 5.8R in tennis shoes... yikes!

Some of their FAs

Fingertip Traverse - Smith, Rice, Johnson (it looks like this may be in the movie)
Angels Fright - Smith & Rice (1936)
Trator Horn - Smith (also in 1938)
and the first route at Tahquitz
The Trough - Smith (1936)

Right where the narration states they are at 7500 feet is Fingertip Traverse. The fall he takes looks to be somewhere near jensans jaunt/traiter horn?

I don't even want to contemplate hauling a spring wound 35mm motion picture camera and tripod around up there.

Yes Greg,

I was aware the Sierra Club used to do that sort of thing (the movie actually says that, too). Plus I have two friends who used to teach for them and have heard some pretty spicy stories from BITD.

They (Sierra Club) no longer do any climbing courses because of the ice axe incident some years back--my reference was meant as a joke alluding to some of the questionable techniques employed in the film.
