Whenever I'm away from the Taco for any length of time (like this recent trip), the first thing I usually do is check in on the latest Chiloe thread to get my (vicarious) climbing fix.

If it's not a visual feast of a TR, beautifully written, filled with humor and reliable beta, then it's something just as interesting and thoughtful. Doggie appreciation. Climbing history (mesmerizing climbing history at that!). Fireside chats about the vertical world from the east side of the Great Divide.

I can think of few others who participate on SuperTopo with such generosity of spirit, humble intelligence, patience with the confrontational, tolerance in the face of differences, and simple radiance of presence. That many of us only know him through the Internet seems a deprivaion to us all, but then again, it's just another reason to thank CMac for providing us with the Taco.

So...to the master of magnificent TR's

photo stolen from Cowpoke

the guy whose technique is getting better with age

another photo stolen from Cowpoke

the prof whose rope management is textbook

all other photos stolen from Chiloe...I think

the belay-setter who would drive Donini to drink

the doglover who sees more than just a dog in his four-legged family members

and the husband who embodies the universal truth that behind every great man

especially if that great man is a prolific climber

there is a smart, beautiful woman...cleanin' the gear. ;-)

Thank you for your presence there, Larry. You have made--and continue to make--this world a better place for all of us.

I'll definitely save him a seat at the virtual Deli......or the actual one.
Cheers, Larry.

Jim,

Thanks for that photo of them with the flowers in their hair! I looked all over the Taco for it...but nada. Could only find ones of Chiloe on some dumb rockface or another somewheres... ;-)

I not only love his trip reports, his postings on sometime controversial off-topic threads are always worth reading. He actually changed my mind on one matter and pointed me to useful sources that remain bookmarked. Thanks for both the OT and on-T posts.

Haven't climbed with Chiloe, but I have a strong feeling that he would be a great person to have on the other end of the rope.

I guess you could say that I have virtually followed Larry around in the backcountry for a few years but have never had the pleasure to meet him. Sharing campfire stories with him or a rope would be great I bet!

Jim (Donini)--

Didn't you read my OP?

Didn't you see The Anchor Photo????

Didn't you count all those pieces of gear in his anchor???? (not a single Blue Cam, BTW.)

You'd kill him before the third pitch...I just know it.

heh-heh-heh... ;-)

I think I saw Chiloe's entry in the Conness summit register after he got up Harding Route? I'm going from memory of my second time up North Ridge last summer? Maybe I'm just hallucinating?

A hell of a guy. Put up some classics, some I've climbed, some I'm planning on getting on.

Sent me a Alpinist that I was missing just because (Still owe him and Steelmonkey some sort of a gift... haven't forgot, just sort of bogged down with the recent wedding and all).

Would love to tie in with him some day.

When I come to the Taco, I literally use Chiloe as my quality control mechanism - instead of browsing the forum lists, my MO since early this year has been to find his username, click on the 'show all recent posts' deal and read what's there. Not only does he post great stuff, but he tends to cultivate threads where EVERYBODY posts great stuff - the gifted touch of a professor. I use several avatars for this, let's call 'em the gatekeepers, but Chiloe is my golden standard.

Plus, I appreciate him because his user name is a place I lived a while, and loved.

And finally after seeing L's photos I appreciate him even more because his wife is very cute (all due respect, Chiloe!).

Cheers to one of the Taco's finest.

Nice Laura! But, you left out the parts about Chiloe having put up a lot of cutting-edge routes, having a climbing resume that includes a huge number of hard classics from all over the the place and for at least the last 4 decades (the Naked Edge in 1969!) AND, as near as I can tell from the TRs, he gets out climbing practically every day, still climbing hard stuff, in his golden years.

Plus, he took a camera and used it.

L,

Thanks for the thread. My hats most definitely off to Chiloe. Love his comments, his demeanor, his climbing ethos, and his obelea vulgarum. Thanks for the laughs.
