I never knew this thing cracked in thirds in 2000. It was rumored to be the biggest boulder in the world. Back in the late 70s there was a really fantastic V4 boulder problem that went up an overhanging side and you had to shoot a dyno for a pipe sticking out of the rock, mantle the pipe and face climb (5.10-) about 30 feet to the top. It was a total gaz. The Giant Rock was thought to be a holy site and fav locale for UFO buffs and shaman. Not too far away is Van Tasasel's "Integraton." Weird shite, but interesting. Check out how the Giant Rock split, exposing the white granite core. Can't imagine why I never heard about this. We used to boulder out there all the time. Fantastic location - but too many guys with guns.

Johnny, the guns the people have out there are for protection from the Goverment people that are trying to keep them from meeting the Venetians.

That's incredible.

Wish the a-holes with the spray paint were standing under it. Graffiti really pisses me off... especially on something so cool.

That hunk fell off about ten years ago.

I was tending bar at a Mexican joint and one of my customers told me about it.

The resulting arch (main boulder) would be a sick traverse .

How big is that boulder out in front of the Astro domes?

who has the biggest boulder?

gotta be somewhat 'boulder' looking, no rocks that are merely big.

Namibia has the title now. wow!

Geeez, Roy, I'm thinking that's the very pipe you hucked the dyno too - the one I'm standing on in that pic with those ridiculous pants. But I don't recall the top rope. Somebody must have led it first.

I remember that as being a really prime line and big adenture to solo.

I'm pretty sure that's the pipe in question John.

I don't remember the exact shenanigans from that particular day; I think Gaines was there & we were trying to do something kooky, like photo shoot-wise, that never really jelled.

Aside from a picture of you taking pictures of Skip at the J. Paul Pebble,
This is all I have (speaking strictly photography here) of the great Juan Largo!

Very interesting. I once witnessed an intense lightning storm in Baja with some fellow geology grad students. We investigated an area that seemed to get hit a bunch after the storm and noticed this huge rock with a big, fresh-looking split in it - not unlike a Mt. Woodson boulder. The funny thing is, on top were some fresh-looking pieces of rock that were sitting on an angle that surely would have washed down after a few good rains. Our conclusion was that lightning from that storm was responsible for that split - presumeably by instantly vaporizing water that had infliltrated an existing, incipient crack. My structural geology prof was intrigued and wanted us to write a paper - we never did. I must say, the fracture looked nothing like the obvious conchoidal fracturing seen in these pics.

From the deuceofclubs.com site:

"I was in need of a California road trip real bad, so after provisioning with ten bucks worth of beef jerky, Triscuits, a can of aerosol cheese, a case of beer, guns and tools we shoved off and headed away from town."
