Ilike the way the hair blends into the crack in #1, but for a book cover, I'd pick #2.

#1 too much rock, too little subject. Crop? - except you may loose belayer.
#2 seems too distorted. If you rotated to fix, climber would look like he's on a slab.
#3 too much pine tree
#4 my vote. Subject fills frame better. Too bad they aren't busy free climbing, but most aid in Zion anyway... Cam is too shiney, maybe this can be fixed?
#5 looks like he's taking a crap.

#2 for sure. Matt Wilder's onsight ascent is pretty badass. Not to mention free climbing shots always look cooler. :D

Guidebooks are like drug laws; while they may be well intended (and not all are) they end up doing more harm than good.

How about a cover picture of a gravestone for another wild adventurous place to practice the high arts?

OK, rant over, please return to ogling.

#4 = Zion's legacy of aid routes.

sorry, just posting out loud.

if the guide is about aid routes predominantly, as I suspect it is, then the cover shot should be aiding to reflect the contents.

fyi. Chris, I think you need to wait until we mock-up some options with title text, author info, etc. There are other issues than simply what is a nice photo. It's too early to throw this to the wolves.

The book is actually mostly free climbing so we are fairly committed to having a free climbing shot on the cover. There will be 20-25 clean aid walls also in the book. No nailing routes. Not sure yet when it will be out.

Solo on the Streaked Wall in his portfolio is as cool or better than any of those.

Knowing that it's a free climbing book-

#1 all the way.
