Researchers find oldest-ever stash of marijuana

Ottawa — Researchers say they have located the world's oldest stash of marijuana, in a tomb in a remote part of China.

The cache of cannabis is about 2,700 years old and was clearly “cultivated for psychoactive purposes,” rather than as fibre for clothing or as food, says a research paper in the Journal of Experimental Botany.

The 789 grams of dried cannabis was buried alongside a light-haired, blue-eyed Caucasian man, likely a shaman of the Gushi culture, near Turpan in northwestern China.

The extremely dry conditions and alkaline soil acted as preservatives, allowing a team of scientists to carefully analyze the stash, which still looked green though it had lost its distinctive odour.

“To our knowledge, these investigations provide the oldest documentation of cannabis as a pharmacologically active agent,” says the newly published paper, whose lead author was American neurologist Dr. Ethan B. Russo....

...The marijuana was found to have a relatively high content of THC, the main active ingredient in cannabis, but the sample was too old to determine a precise percentage.....

Was a PV-1 Ventura (aka "Lockheed Lodestar") seen anywhere in the area? If so, Licky may be interested:

The rulers of China and Sinkiang will not be pleased about the "blue eyed Caucasian" bit. One of their enduring imperial fantasies is that that area was settled by the Han, and has been ruled by them for 2,000 years or more. Archaeologists and historians would mostly agree that the area has been a cross-roads for millenia, that it was settled from the west, and that it has only intermittently been ruled by the Han.

The Middle Kingdom does still have its peculiar beliefs about its place in the world.

"Next to a blue eyed caucasian male?
In China?"

I spent a few years in China, and for awhile in the mid '80s travelled clandestinely to some places closed to foreigners. I speak decent Mandarin and sometimes would tell people i was from Xinjiang, the desert province where this ancient stash was found. I'm partly of Norwegian ancestry and blue eyed, but my hair and eyebrows were dyed black, and often my story seemed believable (!). I remember some fisherman in Qinghai province on the edge of the Tibetan plateau laughing when they heard this, saying, "Ha, ha...when we first saw you, we thought you were a foreigner". There are dozen or so non-Han ethnicities in Xinjiang (East Turkestan), some with red or fair hair, and blue eyes. Check the photo below of a Uighur girl.

I've been to some tombs very close to the "stash" location and seen 800 year old mummies, shriveled up from the very dry air, all their features still visible. Ground temperatures reach 140 degrees in the desert (the Taklamakan) and you can see snowy 5000m mountains, the Tien Shan, 70 miles to the north. Very old underground tunnels bring snow meltwater all the way to the oases, or it would evaporate before it got there. Quite an amazing area.
