The wife is a trail runner, and she wants one of them fancy GPS/Heart Rate monitor watches for Christmas. I'm just starting to look into it but getting a lot of mixed reviews. Garmin Forerunner305 is currently the lead contender. Any tacopinions on the subject?

I have had the 205 for 2 years and really like it. It has shown to be accurate and the display is easy to read. Only downside it is rather large but you get used to it.

Costco is running a $40 off coupon on that right now.

Never used that one, but most of the cycling folks I know are pretty happy with their Garmin bike units.

Gotta go with the 305. Definitely your best choice. As said it is rather large tho.
Where I can find me one of those trail running wives?

Yeah - there are a lot of 305's on the trail these days.

I notice Garmin is selling something called a 405 - the next generation. I would wait for several months for people to test whether something so small picks up satelites as well as the larger units. I like a larger screens on the older units as well.

I have a 301, which came out before the 305. It's great. I don't go for a ride or run w/o it. I have several years of data that is interesting to look at for comparison, to strategize for races I repeat every year, etc. I rarely wear the HR monitor. I am mostly interested in the pacing and odometer.

Thanks all.

JLP - The 405 is getting a lot of negative reviews; it has some touch-sensitive bezel that has a mind of its own and apparently really freaks out when you get sweat on it. Plus it's $100 more.

jbar - I found mine right here in Truckee. I don't know how things are in Georgia, but the Golden State is chocked full of 'em ("Well east coast girls are hip; I really dig those styles they wear..."). You know the song.

I hadn't thought about the largeness being a benefit because the screen is larger. I started out using the HR. Thought it was cool to watch how my pace would stay the same but my rate would drop and I would feel much more comfortable when I started warming up after a couple of miles. I don't ever use it anymore though.

Every time I visit Boulder I'm blown away by all the active chicks. Girls here that say they like the outdoors freak out when I show them pictures of me camping in the snow.
