Hi, I have the last week of October free and I was wondering what the weather has been like up in the Needles. Friends have told me it could either be really great or super cold. Anybody been up there recently? Thanks!!

Across the street from the road to the trailhead.

I've heard all the gates are closed. Better call ahead.

Sounds like a perfect time to drive up the lower road from Johnsondale and climb on the huge sun exposed south face of Voodoo Dome.

edit: no 5.15's there though.

It sucks. If it isn't hot and windy it's cold, blowing sand, and windy.

I'm guessing you are talking about the Needles climbing area in the Southern Sierra, not the Needles town on the Arizona border. This weekend should be very nice up there, alittle chilly but the Aspens are turning colors so you get the extra show of fall color to check out. Since I'm hearing the gates closed, you could ride your bike in to the rock. Plan on a long uphill slog, but with colors all around like I said. You might find a bit of intimidation to greet you if your going for the first time checking out the climbs. Its okay just to look ...........

So what's involved if the gate is closed? I've been told there is great camping and that the hike is about an hour uphill slog... is that still the same? Thanks for all of you help.

It's a little less than 3 miles when the gate is open(from camp to the lookout tower) so about an hour. When the gate is closed it's at least double that, but it's been a while. Not hard as it is a road you're walking on. It is a steady uphill road though. You'll have the place all to yourselves as no one wants to walk.

Sounds like an adventure. Do you think I would have better luck up at Shuteye? I don't mind hiking, but I don't want to spend a week doing that if in fact the gate is closed in the Needles (How do I find this out)? Thanks for all the beta.
