If you happen to be in Torino this month, check out the Flexibility Exhibition, there's one of my super lightweight Titanium single portaledges on display (built around 1992). It weighs 4 lbs., and has a ripstop fly (not on display)which packs into a softball-size stuffsack and weighs about a pound.

here's a pic:

Here's the Exhibition details:

There was also an article about portaledges ("Extreme Design") in the Italian Design Magazine, Abitare in March 2008.

Nice John....
Good article in the design magazine. The writer liked the way ledges were designed by the end users. Somehow this isn't always the case in design.

Any pictures of the Tasmanian rain forest?

Hey Duece,
Wanna help us geek out with a few salient details about how you got this one lighter than usual?

Perhaps the fly should be named the "Shroud of Turin".

Yeah Titanium is the goods.

Our breakdown rescue litters are titanium at $1000 each. Our original steel litters were 50 pounds, heavy bastards.

Now the titanium litter weighs in at a beautiful 23 pounds.

Our knees are loving it ......

Isn't titanium heavier than aluminium? Which is what other ledges are made of, right?

So.....

Shouldn't this ledge be stronger but heavier than commercial ledges?

I'm sure I'm wrong.

Someone please enlighten me of my ignorance.

I guess what I was after was some insight into tubing diameter and wall thickness. Also looking what what else diverged from other A5 ledges. Knowing Duece he didn't just hack things down, so I'm curious about the corner pieces, etc, were they also Ti, and what else got tweaked? I imagine there's probably a market out there for lighter ledges for the yuppy set. Or have BD and Metolius have proven different with good sales of their heffer ledges?
