Hi,
Four of us are coming over from the UK and heading to Yosemite next Friday, arriving in the valley approx 6pm. We are hoping to stay in Camp 4, just wondering if anyone has got any tips on the best way to secure a place?
Are we better to wait and head there early doors on saturday? If so any recommendations for campsites/cheap accommodation outside the park?
Thanks
Mike

Arrive at 6 am instead of 6 pm. Accommodations outside the park will depend on which way you're coming from. Tell peeps and they can likely help.

Camp 4 is walk in only. At 6 pm there probably won't be a ranger there; but I've heard that if campsites are open, you can camp and pay the next morning without getting bothered by the rangers. I don't know if this is true. If campsites are full, then you will get full harrassment. The other campgrounds in the park will take reservations and will probably not be full this time of year.

Though Camp 4 is the bastion of Yosemite climbing I would rather not stay there. That said, at that hour on a Friday you are better off making a reservation at one of the campgrounds and the getting up in the morning to get a place at Camp 4.

Thanks for the replies,
We are flying into San Francisco and hiring a car.
We did look at booking the other campsites in the valley but I think we've left it too late, from what I can work out they look to be full.
Looking forward to the trip now as the weather has been terrible in England, we havn't seen the sun for months and most of the country is now underwater!

you can stay in Crane Flat your first night, just inside the park but not in the Valley itself. Crane Flat is called "reservation required" but we have stayed there a few times without reservations and never had any trouble.
Wake up early, take your camp stove and guidebook to Camp 4, and brew up while you wait in line for your camp site. On a Saturday morning in the prime climbing season, best to get to Camp 4 before 7 am to get your place in line - I think the trip from Crane Flat to Camp 4 is a little less than an hour. Enjoy...

There is some information here: http://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/camp4.htm
Being at Camp 4 early in the morning, before 7 AM, seems the safest strategy. Particularly on weekends.
The other "no reservation" campgrounds are at http://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/nrcamping.htm Crane Flat and Tamarack Flat aren't far from the Valley, and likely on your way into the Valley. If you arrive in the evening, and there's room there, it may be simplest just to overnight at Crane, then head in first thing, as it's only another 30 minutes to Camp 4.
It is possible to obtain sites, temporarily at least, in some of the "reservation" campgrounds, but a more involved strategy is required.
Camping outside campgrounds but in the Park, e.g. by the car at a pullout, is likely to get you repeated wake up calls in the small hours from people in uniforms.

Be smart, don't be sleeping in your car when dawn arrives. Plus, who needs to sleep in Yosemite?! Sleep really is overrated...

There are Always cancellations in the Park, just don't tell anyone.
When we Kayak the Merced, there are always people who go into the park without a campsite, they always get one, this has been my recollection over the last 15 years.
