Thanks but those contests are big ripoffs to anyone but an amateur photographer wishing to see his name in print. The actual payoffs for images printed in rock and ice are far in excess of the "prizes" offered and are actually the publisher's own ingenius way of making themselves look generous while getting the best images at a discount.
(note. I have images in some catalogs out there and have been supported by the gear makers with gear, usually WAY more than offered in these kind of contests.
Still, it's capitalism and I can't fault them for trying and folks like to send in their images. I'm sure many are better than mine.

So cynical. Who hurt you Karl? Who? Did you, like Woody, vote for an idealistic candidate in the 60's and have been shaking your fist at the sky ever since?

Yep I agree with Karl .... they just want quality photos for low prices... I looked at the offer too and thought it insulting actually.... Plus, just read the last 30 ElCap Reports and you get free photos of climbers on ElCap, some of which are as good or better than most in R&I.... and they are posted the same day they are shot.

Not a bit cynical. If you know the photo business, it's plain as day. Every outdoor photog knows the scam.
Look at the names credited in the rags month after month and you almost never see them in a photo contest.
Just callin spades spades here.

Rock and Ice is a travesty. Note the writings of Andrew Bisharat, Their editor!

Never subscribed to them and never submitted an image to them.
At least supertopo is more real and free. We know what's up when it happens and it's old news when it hits the rags. Photo contests may engage the readers and keep em on the hook, and generate cheap images for them, but the forces of internet and digital democracy that have squashed the market for outdoor photogs will also slowly kill the print media for something like climbing.
