From the LA Times:
http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-bees4-2008jun04,0,4712690.story
A swarm of bees stung a group of teenage boys hiking in a San Fernando Valley park Tuesday, sending one of them to the hospital and killing a dog that disturbed the beehive, authorities said.

The five boys and the dog, a Boxer named Rocky, were hiking in Stoney Point Park in Chatsworth when the attack occurred, Jane Kolb, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, said.

hey there... say, i am not in that area... but thanks for the share....

used to live in south texas.... it was very very sad to such news, when an older folk, or local was out mowing the lawn.. and a some unseen hive somewhere heard it----these folks died, too...

also, horses and such have as well...

folks were really warned to check out there property, as south texas has much "untamed yards", etc, in many near-rural areas, and even near town, in some larger yards...

It would truly be horrible to be attacked a couple pitches up a climb.

What are your options?

hey there john hansen... as to climbing, too... you'd have no way to know where the nearby hives may be, so there is no "pre caution" in that one sense (unless an incident has been known, of recent and reported, such as what has now happened from that news situation)...

on the other hand though (for the most part, but one never knows, as they are "ticked off" easy), it is mostly NOISE that sets them off...

BUT--traveling in there neaby vicintiy (which at times, isn't nearby by "our" standards, can ALSO trigger them off--and they have a short "temper" fuse, very sadly so)

I got stung over a dozen times on the Vampire at Tahquitz at one belay as my partner led last year. Wasps, not killer bees.

The next few days my ankles were bigger than my calves. Luckily my lower legs were the only exposed skin, and closest to their nest in the crack apparently.
