My family and I with two kids under 10 will be traveling into Western Montana on a vacation around the west this summer. After looking at the photos here there seems to be lots of climbing. What is the best guide to get and/or any suggestions on family friendly crags or cliffs. Looking for easy to moderate 1 pitch stuff that is kid friendly. Out of the way places with camping near water would be great
Thanks Jeff
EDIT
I guess I could have spelled Montana right.

The only thing I know of that fits this description is lake kookanoosa. If anyone knows of climbing closer to whitefish/west glacier, I would love to hear about it.

How far West were you thinking?
I'll beta you what I can, but West of Butte I'd have to refer you to Hard Rock (Missoula area).

Koocanusa is pretty awesome, climb at Stone Hill, like a 3 minute approach. Camp down at Peck Gulch, like 2 miles away and be right on the lake.
Really good quartzite from like 5.6 to 5.13, most of it moderates.
Can't remember the name of the guidebook, the climbing shop in Kalispell carries it.

There's a bunch of craggin' in Kootenay Canyon south of Missoula. Can't recall, but, I seem to remember that some of it might be kid friendly.
Also some shorter stuff in Bass Creek that would be kid friendly.
Believe some of the crags near Lolo Hot Springs would be good, too. Then you can hit the springs. Neat area. Good fishin' nearby too.
Craggin' near Drummond that might work, too.
You might hit up Pipestone or Trailhead in Missoula for info.

Koocanusa is not all that kid friendly. The moderates are really spead out, with one here, one there. Some are right on the highway and not that great to go running around. Lots of ledges and tiers too. Kooc is close to Glacier Park though for hikes, views and camping, whitewater, etc.
Lolo pass has some nice moderates, on granite, great camping. Butte area too; dragons back area. Fantastic playground.
While not in Montana, if you're out west, it's hard to beat City of Rocks for the kids; for everyone really.

Best guide for a good overview of Montana in general would be the Rock Climber's Guide to Montana (Falcon)
http://www.amazon.com/Rock-Climbers-Guide-Montana-Falcon/dp/1560443359
Bozeman has a couple of top rope friendly crags up Hyalite Canyon, which is also a great place for camping, hiking and fishing.
Practice Rock (old photo from the approach)
Mostly 1 pitch from 5.6 up, most routes can be easily TRed.
up canyon from that is Croc Rock, which also is primarily a tr crag.
The '5.9 Crack'
There is a new guide due out soon for Bozeman as well(poster said May), so it should be on the shelfs by early June...hehe
Butte is pretty great for kid friendly stuff, Queen Rock up at spire has alot of great routes that can be TRed...great camping, lots of trails for mountain biking, natural hot springs, and a fun lake nearby too
Delmoe Lake
Sheep Mountain up near Helena is good fun, and some nice camping too. Missoula has alot to offer as well...
guides to that stuff

Not sure when you'll be around or where in MT you're thinking of checking out...you're always welcome to come to the Batholith Bash too.(link posted up thread)
Hope this helps,
Tom

Thanks for all the help. I think we will head in that direction after hitting City of the Rocks and Idaho, and be there in late June or early July. Cheers Jeff
