L, that's an interesting question you raise. I think it is because it APPEARS to be so rare thesedays. We seem to only get bad news from the media. I don't think they realize that good news sells too.
Heartwarming stories are also beneficial to a society (the media doesn't really care) in that they teach and encourage kindness, cooperation, and selfless consideration for others.
That's the way I see it anyways.

Exactly as Bluering says: theres so much good all around us all the time, yet WE, as much as the media, seem to want to always focus on the bad.
