There is a plan in the state legislature to close down North Carolina's state parks during the winter in order to save the state some money. Unfortunately for climbers, winter is the prime time to access most of these areas. The specific climbing areas affected by the closure would include: Rumbling Bald, Stone Mountain, Pilot Mountain, Crowder’s Mountain, Dixon School Road boulders, Cook’s Wall, Moore’s Wall, and Two Mile. Basically EVERYTHING not on USFS land, and the only wild-ish places east of Linville Gorge.
This closure would be a real loss to climbers in the whole southeast.
The CCC and the Access Fund have put together a letter writing tool that lets you easily contact the state representatives involved in this decision. Visit the link below to voice your dissent (It only take 1-2 minutes)! It would be a real shame if this happened....
Take Action!

Spent a week in the Bald over the winter break and had a blast - great locals and great winter climbing weather on sweet splitters.
good luck down there...

I don't see anywhere in the ccc website raising the issue. Am I missing something?

There's thread on the message boards about this issue at
http://carolinaclimbers.org/forums/state-savings.html
It is very curious that there is not more information about this on the CCC website. My guess would be that the powers-that-be in the CCC know that this bill has little chance of passing, but still, a strong response now could help this issue not come up in the future.

I bet it is not on the CCC website yet because it is a recent development. I heard about this through a CCC e-mail so I bet they care about it....The petition is worth signing anyway...
