For thousands standing on the top of Half Dome has been one of the peak experiences of their lives.
For a small minority of us the cables have been a convenient way down.
A few environazis wish to abolish that for all.

Descending the cables IS the "unsafely" part!
let's enforce an elitist structure and keep the washed (versus unwashed) masses off the top of Half Dome.
Elitist pricks need only apply.

The nerve!
Scottish trail-builders coming to the US and drilling their way up our virgin "perfectly inaccessible" mountains!
Good riddance!
best post this thread is going to have.

Both Anderson and Muir were Scots.
If you cut its cables, will Half Dome float away?

Just another attempt by the petty bureaucrats to pretend that they are working. They're not: fire their asses and let them get real and productive jobs.

When so much in the world needs Real fixing and people's lives hang in balance whether children (and themselves) will be fed and clothed what is up with all this yammering?
Get a few representatives from each thought group that represents this very delicate, special interest decision and form one that works for all. Not rocket science here, just differences of public opinion that can be resolved.
imho of course, lynnie

Ok, so the cables are cut let's say, then what is the rating of that same route once the stuff is gone, 5.3?

Like a bunch of bicyclists telling the government to tear down the freeways. Besides, the cables and trail are currently nominated for listing on the National Register of Historic Places, like Camp 4 already is. Don’t waste your time seeking their removal because that will never happen. My complaint is the regulation and cost; what if you’re on the PCT or JMT and want to wander on up as a side trip? I guess the ticket-taker will now say “no.” There should be flexibility for realistic accommodation.
Edit: without the cables, that route is rated Class 4 on ether side of the cables.

I can save y'all a lot of thinking and typing time on this. The cables will stay, and a firmly managed reservation system will be put in place. The NPS will establish a carrying capacity for the trail (probably using methodology developed by Bob Manning out of the University of Vermont to help crunch those numbers) that will determine the number of permits isued per day. There be a permit season, in the shoulder seasons and winter you'll just be able to go do it.
For permits issued during the permit season, I imagine there will be a fee, to manage the reservation/permit system (think Grand Canyon River Trip permit, only seasonal, and on a far more modest and manageable scale.)
The only thing that really surprises me is that they're doing this with an EA.
Expect a lawsuit regardless of where the agency lands on this.
Alan Nelson and his dad climbed up the dome just left of the cables. He said it was like 5.2 or therabouts.

I agree, why do an EA at all? Nevertheless, I read the EA and it is flawed in several areas. I might comment, but NPS never listens to anyone anyway.
