Appreciate Your Thoughts on This.....trying to list all the Pros and Cons.

Past two years have resulted in alot of miles clocked to the Eastside of the Sierra and the Valley. Didn't get the job at Tioga Pass Resort but that might prove to be a serendipity as I took time to look around the base of Tahoe for possible relocation and liked what I saw.

Drove home yesterday and the traffic/congestion of so many people in So Cal produced a stark comparison in my heart and brain to the slower paced, less crowded Incredible Beauty of the Eastside of CA and NV.....I lean towards Minden, Carson and Gardnerville for the milder winters.

I live in a nice rural area now, but I'm surrounded by people and traffic. I've lived here for 28 years so it would be a change. Have some family and friends in the Eastside.

lynne-

I grew up in Lake Tahoe and lived there for 28 years until moving down to the valley in Minden. I have now been here in Minden for the last 12 years. I love this area, but I am probably a bit partial because this has been home for all of 2 years of my life.

I like this area because we do have all the seasons with none of them being too harsh. Although i find July and August a bit hot, I can be swimming in Tahoe in 25 minutes or get up to the higher elevations to cool off just as quick.

Growing up I said I would never live here in the valley, but when the time came to buy a home this was the logical choice. Come winter I never shovel snow, but can be skiing within 30 minutes. Compared to Tahoe where on a good winter you have plenty of shoveling to do.

Bishop for winter trips is only 2.5 hours and Tuolumne is even quicker.

I think the biggest problem you might find around here is employment. I don't know what you do for a living, but many people find that getting a job can be tough. the economy is horrible here and many are struggling. Highest unemployment rate in the country and Nevada is the leader in home foreclosures.

My mom has sold real estate in the carson valley/lake tahoe area for about 30 years, so if you need any advice or have questions feel free to e-mail me.

hope you find your own slice of paradise wherever that may be.

take care
dave

ps the thing I miss the most is the ocean and surfing, so I make trips to Santa Cruz to get my fix!!!

dave, really thanks for taking the time to provide so much great info !!! Today I am sessing my house to see what needs to be done and thinking about the timing of selling. Place looks alot better after the rains come. No one can afford H2O here now and the place doesn't look that great in the summer. :D

Edit: yeah, I'll miss the beach and Jtree, but I can come down to visit them. The beaches in the north are cold but beautiful. Just get a warmer wetsuit.

Lynne,
I've lived in the Minden/Gardnerville area since 1999, except for a 2-1/2 year move to Santa Cruz. Before that I lived in Truckee for 17 years or so (and in Yosemite Valley during many summers), so I've been around this area for quite a while.

The Carson Valley is beautiful, and, yes, usually mild winters. You are just minutes away from Hope Valley, Carson Pass, Tahoe, etc. for skiing, hiking, climbing, whatever. Woodfords Canyon has climbing, and is sparsely visited by climbers. It is probably a little too hot in the summers, unless you get out early. Really, almost any outdoor activity you want is somewhere nearby, and Tuolomne, Mammoth...moderate drives away. I had a ski pass to Mammoth for several years, and used it a lot, driving there for just a day of skiing. Of course there is lots of skiing closer by, and wonderful backcountry skiing is just up the road off of Hwy 88, let alone that available around Truckee. I could just go on and on. If you want to do something outside, it is close by.

That being said, as Dave mentioned, finding employment in the Carson Valley is really tough right now. It's not much better up at the Lake, although there will be seasonal winter jobs coming up. Lots of folks have left the area because of lack of employment, and it seems every other house is being foreclosed. But, if you are in the market for buying, there are deals to be had.

And, I just have to mention, politically, well....our little community trends toward the Right, actually, well Right, if you know what I mean. But, if that isn't a turn off for you...then who cares?

It is beautiful, quiet, fabulous weather. When we moved away all I could think about was moving back. Now that we are back, I'm hiking almost every day, and happy again.

Good luck making your decision. Feel free to email me if you have any other questions I might be able to help you with.

Thanks for the imput t*r and Carolyn ! I've never had the opportunity to play at winter sports and I'd Really like to. t*r if I make the move I'll for sure take you up on the offer :D I've been working on the job/how to support lynnie for some time. Got to trust my best friend a bit. He knows me well. If the move is right, it will happen.

As I sit in Minden at the moment...I am here for the Death Ride. I spend a lot of weekends here in the winter as I have season pass to Kirkwood. And last week I was in Mammoth and Bishop. Today as I drove from Carson City back to Minden, I thought about how beautiful this valley is (and with conveniences in this area ...as I had to go to a Target) and then I saw the mileage sign to Bishop (150) and then immediately the turn off to Kingsbury Grade/Tahoe. And I flashed about how doable all that is and how absolutely gorgeous this area is. I live in Santa Cruz and I sail a great deal so I can't easily leave the coast but now that I am retired (going on two weeks!) I've often thought about getting short term rentals (month at a time) in my favorite places like Minden in the winter; Bishop in spring or fall...same for Moab. So much to do and now I have the time...if not much money. You have the right attitutde....recently I saw the newest Karate Kid and I am likely going to "bast##dize" the line he said but it has haunted me (in a good way) every day since I saw the movie: "living is not what has been, but that which you rush towards" Good luck...hope to cross paths with you sometime soon. The east side is a wonderful, magical place and it's hard to not want to be there. At the same time living there can be very isolating and resource intensive. It's a looooong haul out of there for half the year and it can be pretty insular. Just something to keep in mind.

Lynne-

Missed you at TPR a couple of Wednesdays ago by 30 minutes. I was home bound from a 3500 mile road trip thru Utah, Cali, Wyoming and Colorado. Got to spend a few minutes talking to J.

Coming down the 14 and 5 into OC, I realized I've got to get out of SoCal. This place is a congested mess. After all the miles in small towns, backroads and countryside, it became apparent that this place is knott where I was meant to be. Guess you had the same revelation.

Good luck on your search for a new home.

Livin on the eastside is so great, dont worry about the work thing. Think about all the things you can do if your not working 40+ hours a week like most people in socal. I live in Bridgeport and work always seems to come and go, but we've managed here for 6 years no problem. I lived in Tahoe for a long time but too busy these days for me. Carson valley is a nice place to live.

Lynne, I say do it. I am thinking of doing it myself.
Life is like climbing, sometimes you have to get out there and take a risk.
I am partial to Bishop, but like the Minden, Gardnerville, Carson City area quite a bit.
JUst a thought, if you have a college degree,, you might consider teaching, or substitute teaching.

Gene, Great Question. Thanks ! Remember this Gene ? " The best opportunities come 6 months too soon." You told me that @ a year ago and when I have tough adventure decisions....like do it or not....I make my decisions on your advice.

Blitzo, C4R....I so want to make it happen. Never done. Want to.

ekat, great advice as always since you have been there and done it. I'd love to try something like that.

johntp, will pray for your own revelation of what's next in yo life. Thanks, you are such a good friend.

10b4me, friend let's listen to our heart and mind if we are solid and it's for real. I'll think the good thoughts but better yet pray for your future
also. No college degree but that's not a prob. I love to work and I love working with people....it will happen. :D
