I interviewed for a job that involved a fair bit of time in Cairo. Turns out somebody else got the gig, but it got me to wondering about the climbing opportunities in Egypt. Google produced limited results.
Curious if anyone has climbed over there.

I have never been but I plan to visit here, Wadi Rum and some off the map stuff in Saudia Arabia if I ever get back to the Middle East.

I haven't climbed there either, but I know that there is considerable climbing in the Sinai area on a selection of JT-like granite formations, and some shorter bolted climbs near one of the diving resorts. I know that the Rock Climbers Atlas, Middle East volumne has a chapter on Egypt for general information. There have also been a number of postings on UKclimbing.

In Egypt?
Unfortunately the best climbing around Cairo is buildering...
(highly frowned upon in the temples etc)
There is a little bit in the Sinai near the Red Sea.
If you had the time to travel a little there is some climbing in Isreal.
However, Turkey rocks (forgive the pun) for climbing.
Another climb site for the Sinai:www.climbsinai.com/
A cool pic of Mount Sinai:

In Luxor there's a bad ass hand to fist crack running right up the middle of the right hand statue of the Colossus of Memnon.
I bouldered it but it got a little to high ball for me.

It would be cool but culturally pretty insensitive to be able to clamber around at Abu Simbel ;)

My father in law works in Dubai; he invited my wife and I out and claims that there are some decent mountains/rock formations in Oman...its in the general Egypt area... we don't have a departure date in mind but we are thinking possibly next fall/winter.

I tooled around in Egypt for a couple weeks and the only legit climbing I saw was the stuff in the Sinai. Some bigs things out there, kind of like a giant Joshua Tree. Probably some good adventure climbing, and I do recall seeing at least one magazine article about it years back. It's also a number of hours away from Cairo though, so I'm not even sure if it's something you could tag on the weekends. If you're considering moving to Cairo, I'd do so for the cultural adventure, not the climbing.

I remember an article in Mountain Gazette by Michael Tobias (?) about
climbing at Sinai. It was a good article like most in MG.
Bouldering at Luxor or any site would be tempting the fates way too
much for me. I hear Egyptian jails are not for the weak infidel.
Now a midnight ascent of the Great Pyramid would be a worthy objective.
Think of the sunrise pano you could take!

Not planning on moving there, I did look at working in the UAE as an expat and would have relocated the family for a few years, but that never panned out. I was hoping to make the Cairo gig work as a 4&4 job for about a year. I can't see relocating my kids at this point in their lives, I'm just looking to pay the bills and as things are drying up at my work, I'd like to get another job lined up before I have to get another job lined up.

I worked and climbed last winter in the UAE/Oman. There is "good" rock all around the area. Get the guide book if you are going to go. It is an excellent source of information. With the signs and the maps in the area, you will really get lost without it.

The UAE rock is really sharp limestone. Something seemed to fall of every now and then. The trad climbing suspect but the sport climbing was great fun. I climbed with most of the developers there (...and most of the climbers)
As for Egypt, the St. Catherine area (the supposed site of the burning bush) is not Joshua Tree like at all. There are many 5 pitch climbs in the area.
If you are in the area, you should really go to Wadi Rum. It is spectacular.
