I teach H.S. in La Grande, and am 80's era trad climber getting back in the game with my teenagers. I'm looking to connect with folks having more information than I, about the area. I'm also thinking about creating a group/club to help teens learn to play outside again... Drop me a note if your out there. Thanks

A couple of years ago while on vacation I ran into a nice guy working at a bike shop. He had been doing lots of new routes in the area. Very nice guy but I never got a chance to climb with him. He has tons of info and willing to share. he also has a website I think. cool Area.

Le Grand? Whoo boy. Most people think Eastern Oregon is like in Bend, or perhaps K-falls.

Check out this website. It has a couple of the areas near you.

I may be going to check out Eagle Cap for some climbing this summer(I may be starting a new job so I am not sure of my schedule). I can let you know if you want to come.

edit: you may want the link

I've checked out Spring Mt, High Valley and some of Anthony Lakes. I'd love to get more info on the area around Anthony Lakes and in the Eagle Caps. Plenty of room here for base camp if folks are traveling this way.

I get out there, once in a while, Farmer Pete.
Good Limestone just east of there a bit.
Couple hours from my base, but, it's a fine area.
Around Durkee, Burnt River. Check it out.

I found out about LaGrande's local climbing area from a climber we met at Anthony Lakes Ski Area. Met other climbers at the crag too. From I-84, use exit 243 and drive east about 11 miles on gravel road to the Whitman Overlook left turn. That is where I took this picture from. About 100 routes with afternoon shade.

Well shite howdy, I grew up in La Grande and went to High School there about 30 years ago. Was in ole Joe Sandoz and Steve Ryman's Cliffhangers Club that at the time was one of the only high school climbing clubs. Years later some farm boy was in the club and has gone on to put up a few routes, he wrote a book recently that was published by Patagucci and was well received.

I did a bunch of climbing, skiing, and hiking around there, High Valley, Anthony Lakes, Elgin Wall, Wallowas, etc. Repeated a bunch of stuff but along with Mark Kerns, Steve Brown, Lin Casciato and bunch others we put up a few good routes. I hear now the action is around the Snake. Steve Brown still lives in the area and I bet is the climber folks have met. Super guy.

Kevin Pogue, who oddly enough I meet while college at OSU has a great website for some of the area (see above for a link).

There are a couple off books that describe the climbing around LG. The Falcon copy is crap - not worth buying. The authors could not even get the mountain peaks right let alone changing the names of some of the routes. The Mountaineers edition is better but is limited. Because of the crap info we have tried to put some of the climbs up over on

http://www.mountainproject.com/v/oregon/north_eastern_oregon/106007730

but it far from complete as I do not get other there as much as I would like anymore.
